A week before school started,  Kate Pepper decided to shave her long, braided hair, which had started falling out from treatments for her second bout of brain cancer.
The 17-year-old documented her treatment journey on YouTube, where she explained that she was sad to be unable to express herself through her hairstyle like she had in the past. Right before the start of her senior year, however, Pepper and her mother went shopping and found the perfect two-tone turquoise and black wig.
Pepper was finally feeling pretty and confident at a time where her self-esteem was at an all time low. But sadly, school administrators could only see the vibrant colors of her wig and told her it violated school policy.

Afterwards, her mother Tyliece Pepper, took to social media to vent about her frustrations. She shared a letter her daughter wrote to the school in a Facebook post, which read:

“This wig makes me feel normal, confident and other wise pretty during a time in my life where I have so many things I can’t control. …. I’m empowered by wearing this wig although it’s subtle in color it gives me an abundance of strength and power to grieve the loss of my hair, and gives me the fortitude I need to fight this battle I’m facing with cancer.”

Pepper’s story touched thousands of readers, including Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who tweeted on Sunday:

“I support clear rules for students but I am asking McKinney ISD to create an exception to their dress code and allow Kate Pepper to wear her beautiful wig. I will send a formal communication to the district tomorrow.”

When McKinney ISD announced on Sunday that they would make an exception for Pepper and allow her to wear the wig, Patrick was among the hundreds who sent out statements in support of her.
The school made the right call here. Now, Pepper can focus on more important battles ahead.
