This is so necessary in today’s world!
On Tuesday’s episode of The Fosters, Aaron — a transgender law student played by real trans actor Elliot Fletcher (above) — and Callie (Maia Mitchell) are officially a couple!

This marks the first time a lead female character of a teen drama has coupled up with someone transgender.
Maia told TVGuide.com that this relationship is “breaking down barriers” regarding trans representation in the media. She said:
“[The episode] touches on a lot of things for trans kids, especially the relationship between Callie and Aaron. It’s really important that we do see the heroine female of a show in a relationship with a trans man… I think it’s breaking down barriers. I don’t think I’ve seen that, especially not on a show with our demographic. It’s a really important issue and it’s going to speak to a lot of people, particularly the trans community. I’m really proud of it.”
When the two characters became official, fans couldn’t contain their excitement! As seen on Twitter:
This is the kind of TV that is literally changing and saving lives. This isn’t me being excited and exaggerating.

87% of the population doesn’t know someone who is trans (or know that they know is trans). REPRESENTATION ON TV like this MATTERS.
