Stump didn’t come up short in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show!
The 10-year-old Sussex spaniel won Best in Show on Tuesday night, becoming the oldest dog to do so. Prior to Stump’s victory, the oldest dog to ever win was an 8-year-old Papillon.
Handler Scott Sommer decided to show Stump only days before. He had been in retirement since 2004, after a smaller show victory. Shortly after leaving the ring, Stump became mysteriously ill, almost dying, and spent more than 2 weeks in a pet hospital.
Despite a 5 year absence, Sommer says that Stump “showed his heart out,” much to the delight of the audience at Madison Square Garden.
Stump flew first class home to New York, where he will remain in retirement and live out the rest of his doggy days in peace.
