It’s been more than two years since The Weeknd and Selena Gomez split up, but judging by the song title he just registered, she’s clearly still front-and-center on his mind!
According to the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) website, the Starboy singer recently registered publishing rights to a song entitled Like Selena. That’s a head-scratcher, to say the least, because the pair hasn’t dated now for more than two years — but considering The Weeknd has new music coming out soon, we can’t wait to see what’s going on!!!

On Monday, the singer — whose real name is Abel Tesfaye — got fans excited when he wiped his Instagram account clean and posted one blurry black-and-white pic with the caption “the fall starts tomorrow night,” as you can see (below):
Fans got very excited when it soon became clear that the 29-year-old performer was teasing new music. Then you add this juicy little tidbit about him registering a song that drops the 27-year-old Gomez’s name in the title, and, well, here we are!
Looking back on their ten-month relationship…
As you likely remember, the Lose You To Love Me singer dated The Weeknd for about ten months back in 2017, before splitting in October of that year as Gomez was dealing with a particularly severe lupus flare-up, and her eventual life-changing kidney transplant.
After the pair unceremoniously split, a source spoke to ET at the time about how it just wasn’t meant to be between the two pop stars — and how the Starboy crooner hadn’t exactly been there for her in her time of need after surgery:
“It wasn’t going to last. During the kidney stuff, Selena really relied on her friends as opposed to The Weeknd. He just wasn’t really available to drop everything he had going on to be with her full-time. He was supportive and sweet of course, but it was really a journey with her and her friends.”
And to make matters worse, well, Gomez’s tight-knit group of friends didn’t actually care for her choice in mate, either.

That same source also recalled at the time (below):
“[Her friends] never really liked him. He’s not a part of the church group and didn’t really mesh with her friends. And at this point [2017], those friends and her faith mean everything to her.”
My, how times can change in just two short years!
But seriously, it’ll be interesting to see what The Weeknd has up his proverbial sleeve with this one. He’s certainly more well-known for his on-again, off-again relationship with Bella Hadid — who just had her own little controversy with Selena, BTW — than he is for his short time by Gomez’s side.
And yet, here we are!
