In a country where Madonna has so much influence, you wouldn’t think this would happen.
A gay couple in Malawi was sentenced this morning to 14 years in prison on the charge of “unnatural acts and gross indecency.”
In other words, just because they are gay.
The judge passed the archaic verdict on Steven Monjeza, 26, and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, who have already been jailed since their arrest on Dec. 27, the day after they celebrated their highly publicized engagement.
Gay rights activists in Malawi feared that this ruling would be inevitable because of the countries extreme traditional views. Some say that their release would have been just as terrifying as their imprisonment, as there are many extremist Malawians who would have done them terrible harm.
Shameful. Completely and utterly shameful.
Our thoughts go out to Steven and Tiwonge and hope they stay strong despite this unfair and cruel verdict they have been handed.
