Tinashe is trending on Twitter Tuesday, but not for the reasons she might like!
Following an interview with The Guardian, the Flame singer raised more than just eyebrows after speaking her thoughts on being biracial and the colorism in the black community.

The half Danish and Zimbabwean artist revealed she’s completely aware her career has stalled while her album Joyride still has yet to be released. Attributing it to sexism and how it’s seen as there can only being a couple of successful black female artists at a time:
“Recently, my cousin was with a friend of a friend, who was in high school, and she was like: ├óΓé¼╦£I’m a fan of Kehlani,’ but in a way that was like, ├óΓé¼╦£So I can’t be a fan of Tinashe, too.’ Then my friend posed the question, ├óΓé¼╦£Why not be a fan of both?’ It’s kind of like sport; people feel like they have to pick a side. There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyonc├â┬⌐ or Rihanna. It’s very, very strange.”
But what really had Twitter heated were her thoughts on not fitting in:
“There’s colorism involved in the black community, which is very apparent. It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes. I am what I am.”
Though she was referencing her school years, considering the context of the interview, it’s no wonder Twitter was in arms about her suggesting her skin color was to blame for her music career.
Take a look at some of the reactions (below)!
Tinashe: I’m not really accepted by the black community bc i’m mixed.
Black folks: You’re mixed?

Tinashe’s issue is her image. All she gotta do is switch it up and fire everyone in charge of her marketing and PR. Hire from the TL. Lol

I get what Tinashe means a little bit because y’all do be questioning mixed girls blackness all the time.

Tinashe just used the wrong argument. Colorism isn’t keeping her from shining, it’s probably whats keeping her as relevant as she is

Colorism is def a thing but the way colorism works, Tinashe SHOULD be winning. But her music really isn’t that good so…. https://t.co/0nFLVXxgP5

First off, Tinashe, GIRL. You don’t have an image. Rihanna is Rude Gal, Beyonc├â┬⌐ is Queen Bey, and you are…??? pic.twitter.com/WliAFfh7Hx

Still giggling at all the people telling Tinashe her experience as a black woman inside the industry they know nothing about is wrong 🤣

And making every argument about album sales is hilariously misguided.

The same year Dawn was KILLING it w/o any major platforms FKA Twigs got more shine and FKA had moved like 7k of her record.

Tinashe’s team hates her (as evidenced by these photos) and she has no hits. And that’s the black ass bottom line. pic.twitter.com/Vr9YUWc03t
