A step in the right direction, but we’re still really disappointed in him over this.
The other night in Nashville, Tracy Morgan performed an EXTREMELY offensive routine targeting the gay community at his comedy show. So much of what he said we can’t even bear to repeat and since the news hit the Internet, the gay community has lashed back at the 30 Rock star for his homophobic rant, demanding he apologize as well as he be fired from Tina Fey’s successful show. They’e gotten one of their wishes.
Tracy has offered his apologies via The Advocate , reaching out to his fans and the gay & lesbian community who were offended by his act. His statement says:
“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”
It really did go WAY to far. Pushing boundaries is one thing, but there was NOTHING funny about this routine. It targeted the very stereotypes that gays and lesbians have been railing against and that’s just not cool.
Still, we want to believe he’s sincere here and that he really does feel genuinely awful about his act. However, we do have to concur with GLAAD, who issued their own statement following the news of his rant, asking him to take out the offensive material immediately. Their statement reads:
“We call on him to remove these violently anti-gay remarks from his show and send a strong message that anti-gay violence is not something to joke about.”
AGREED!
A little more tolerance….it’s all we’re asking.
