According to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s annual survey, True Blood has the highest number of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters on television.
The HBO show scored six characters and also discovered that the number of gay characters on the tube have increased 40% from last year after a two-year decline. Gay characters represent 3.9% of all TV characters.
ABC leads the networks with 11 gay characters, followed by Fox with five and the CW with three. NBC decreased from last year to three and CBS trails again, with one.
When it comes to cable, HBO is the leader, trailed by ABC Family, Showtime, Syfy, TNT, FX, Starz and Teen Nick.
GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios said:
“The increase in lesbian, gay and bisexual characters on primetime television not only reflects the shift in American culture toward greater awareness and understanding of our community but also a new industry standard that a growing number of creators and networks are adopting. The recent critical and commercial success of shows like ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Glee’ clearly indicate that mainstream audiences embrace gay characters and want to see well-crafted stories about our lives.”
And we can’t get enough of them!
