Donald Trump‘s Justice Department has reinstated the firing squad to deliver capital punishment to federal inmates.
In a statement on Friday, the Justice Department released a report under Attorney General Todd Blanche, and said:
“Among the actions taken are readopting the lethal injection protocol utilized during the first Trump Administration, expanding the protocol to include additional manners of execution such as the firing squad, and streamlining internal processes to expedite death penalty cases.”
The report continued:
“Under President Trump’s leadership, the Department of Justice is once again enforcing the law and standing with victims.”

Across social media, the world was shocked to hear about the reinstatement of death by firing squad:
“Talk about going backwards in time.”
“At least it’s more humane than lethal injection”
“What is *wrong* with the people in this administration? For f**ks sake.”
“So does this mean that you will finally go after the Epstein Class?”
“Will someone remind me what year it is?!”
“The method doesn’t matter. Instead, the death penalty should be abolished completely.”
“It’s a grim reminder that the U.S. is moving backward, resorting to a method that feels more like an act of war than a civilized form of justice. Honestly, it just shows how broken and desperate the system has become.”
“we just keep moving backwards as a country in every way honestly”
“That’s honestly shocking. It feels like we’re moving backward instead of finding better justice solutions.”
“Thou Shall Not Kill. The sixth Commandment. Life in prison with HARD labor is what should happen to these death penalty cases. Imo”
While some were a little zealous over the news:
“Bring back public executions. That will curb a lot of crime.”
“All forms of punishment should be in the table! Hanging, electric chair, firing squad etc…..”
Prior to this news, five states had been allowing death row prisoners to choose the firing squad should they wish, but there have only been four firing squad kills since 1976. Clearly not a popular choice. In 2025 the Supreme Court gave South Carolina the OK to execute Mikal Mahdi by three-person firing squad. They were supposed to aim for his heart, but they missed, leaving holes in other parts of his chest instead. His attorney said he died in “excruciating conscious pain and suffering.”
