What happens when a zebra and donkey get together?
They have a baby that’s called a zonkey!
A zonkey baby named Ippo was born in Florence, Italy where initial reports have found the rare animal to be in good health!
This isn’t the first zonkey to ever been born. Another zonkey was born back in 2010 at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve in Georgia. And officials say that zonkey has blended in just fine!
Here’s what the owner of the preserve said:
“She’s doing fine. She’s still like a child, so she just runs and plays around. The other animals treat her like a member of the herd.”
We’re glad zonkeys aren’t singled out, and are treated like their fellow brethren.
Although there are other zonkeys in the world, it has been noted that since zebras and donkeys have two different types of DNA – their zonkey offspring usually cannot reproduce.
Still, just because they can’t have baby zonkeys, that doesn’t mean they don’t get horny!
Here’s what the same owner said:
“The female still cycles and comes into heat. They can go through the motions and they have the parts. They just don’t reproduce.”
Aww!
Maybe they should try anyway?
As you can see from the picture (above) Ippo is a beautiful creature and is one of a kind in Italy!
So if you’re in the area – we’d say you should definitely check out the Italian zonkey!
