Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have had their fair share of ups and downs in their 20-year marriage.
In the second part of their Red Table Talk interview, the couple discuss a time where they hit rock bottom, and “broke up” within their union.

It all started with the actress’ 40th birthday in 2011 when the actor organized a huge birthday bash, including a performance by Mary J. Blige, and a video of never-before-seen clips of Pinkett Smith’s late grandmother.
The 50-year-old Ali star recalled:

“She’s like, it’s my birthday and she told me that the party was the most ridiculous display of my ego… Crushed, right? And to this day I know I was crushed because it was true. It wasn’t a party for her. When she called me on that, that’s when I snapped and that’s the only time you ever heard me snap. I snapped in front of [daughter] Willow [Smith] and Willow starts crying and she’s like, ‘Just figure it out.’”

Another low point was when Willow shaved her head in a “deep protest” after the success of her hit 2010 song Whip My Hair. Will continued:

“I was building what I wanted for her and she tried all the different ways to say I don’t want that.”

Because of these moments, “The Fresh Prince” realized how his “ego” had hurt his family.

“I saw for the first time what Jada had been saying the whole time about hiding behind my ego, my dreams and my desires and pretending like it’s love. And I realized [Jada] wanted none of the stuff I had built… The house was too big, there was always too many people here, she didn’t want to travel the way we traveled. She didn’t want all of her kids to be getting trolled on Twitter. She didn’t want any of that.”

After experiencing a “decline” in their relationship, Will and Jada “broke up within [their] marriage.”

“To have to let go of the picture, to have to let go of the dream was devastating. We essentially had to destroy our marriage.”

However, despite their trials and tribulations, divorce was never an option. In fact, contrary to the tabloids, Jada “had never even seen a divorce lawyer.”
Will — who was previously married to Sheree Zampino from 1992 to 1995 — knew he and his wife had to “rebuild” their relationship from the ground up.

“Because I had been divorced before, I wasn’t getting divorced again. Divorce wasn’t an option… I was devastated even worse than a divorce. We broke up within our marriage and got back together again. We had to rebuild with new rules and something way, completely different.”

Jada concluded:

“Ultimately to have a successful relationship, you have to have a relationship with a human being.”

The two also share 20-year-old son Jaden. Will and his ex-wife share 25-year-old son Trey.
Oh, in case you were wondering… Will and Jada have “never been Scientologists” and they’ve “never been swingers.” There you have it!
