This has got to be an incredibly painful time for William Shatner, since his good friend and former Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy passed away just days ago.
Even sadder, Captain Kirk won’t be able to attend Mr. Spock’s funeral. He explained on Twitter:
I am currently in FL as I agreed to appear at the Red Cross Ball tonight. Leonard’s funeral is tomorrow. I can’t make it back in time.

I feel really awful. Here I am doing charity work and one of my dearest friends is being buried.
— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) February 28, 2015
So maybe tomorrow we come together here and celebrate his life.
— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) February 28, 2015
So let’s spend some time tomorrow celebrating Leonard’s life and remembering the man.

True to his word, Shatner signed onto Twitter on Sunday to interact with fans, but found that many of them were angry about his decision to skip the service. He defended his decision though, and how he planned to handle it, tweeting:
“@NYDailyNews: An early look at tomorrow’s front page. http://t.co/ZDjADxLW48 pic.twitter.com/ijdwAwDw14” I want to share this. Let’s discuss it

So my daughters Melanie and Lisabeth are attending Leonard’s services.

I chose to honor a commitment I made months ago to appear at a charitable fundraiser. A lot of money was raised. So here I am; tell me off.

.@toddschnitt @THR I must have missed your email about underwriting the arrangement and payment for this.

One of the other misconceptions seems to be that folks think flights to LAX occur all night long.
— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) March 1, 2015
Dear @toddschnitt as previously stated must have missed your email offering to provide this jet. Please resend CC# so I can make a donation.

But after the bashing, William gave fans a chance to start over. He said:
I asked if you all would be interested in celebrating Leonard’s life today. Why don’t we reconvene at noon ET/ 9am PT and begin.
— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) March 1, 2015
And they remembered him in a BIG way! Mr. Shatner had the most glowing things to say about his co-star, like:
Leonard and I seemed to be bound by fate to be friends. We were born 4 days apart. #LeonardNimoy
— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) March 1, 2015
“@nickwilli131: @WilliamShatner what was your favorite memory of Mr. Nimoy? #LeonardNimoy” Every moment I spent with him.
— William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) March 1, 2015
“@jeanyreeny: @WilliamShatner #LeonardNimoy What kind of a dad was he?” The best. He was also an amazing uncle to my daughters.
