Zara Wants You To Look Chic In This Alt-Right Meme Skirt!

Zara skirt features alt-right meme Pepe the Frog.
Here’s a failed attempt at being cool.
Zara‘s latest offering is a distressed denim skirt that features an embroidered Pepe the Frog, which is super awkward because Pepe has been co-opted by the alt-right and turned into a hate meme. Oops!

Pepe used to be nothing but harmless fun. Created by cartoonist Matt Furie, Pepe first appeared in 2005 in the comic “Boy’s Club,” doing frat-boy stuff like smoking pot and playing video games.
In recent months, however, the illustrated character began popping up in hate memes (usually anti-Semitic and racist) created on 4chan and other similar sites. In late September 2016, Pepe the Frog was added to the Anti-Defamation League‘s hate symbol database.
And now it’s on a Zara skirt, ostensibly in the brand’s effort to be “hip” and “with the times.” But did they really not know what Pepe symbolizes now??? Talk about being not at all with it!
Then again, when are corporations not completely tone deaf? Hello, stupid Pepsi ad!
Hopefully Zara will pull this like it eventually pulled THAT anti-Semitic shirt. But it would be better for everyone involved if they were a little more aware of what’s going on in the world in the first place.
