On Broadway’s biggest night, it was Sir Elton John and his lively and moving musical Billy Elliot that was the brightest star. The show garnered 10 wins from the Tony Awards and no one was more humble and gracious than the piano man himself.
“Thank you for accepting us on Broadway,” he said. “We came here at a hard time economically. You opened your hearts and you opened your wallets.”
Other big wins included Angela Lansbury, who snagged her fifth Tony award for her role in the revival of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, the trio of “Billys”, young actor’s David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, who will share the award for each portraying Billy Elliot, and the production of Hair that won for Best Musical Revival. Oskar Eustis, head of the Public Theater thanked everyone associated with iconic show, especially the original and revival cast: “These 32 most beautiful beasts of the forests, who not only know what hair stands for but live it every day. … Peace now, freedom now, equality now.”
