Madonna Explains Her Gypsie Comments

As we mentioned yesterday, fans began to boo Madonna this week in Romania after she spoke out at one of her concerts against the discrimination against Gypsies in eastern Europe.
But Madge has never been one to censor herself, so why start now? In fact, Madonna says she felt compelled to comment on their discrimination, saying it "made me feel very sad."
Her Madgesty paused during her show and said:
"It has been brought to my attention, that there is a lot of discrimination against Romanies and Gypsies in general in Eastern Europe - it made me feel very sad. We don't believe in discrimination, we believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone."
And when she mentioned discrimination against homosexuals and others, she received even more boos but mixed in with some cheers.
Madge's rep explains, "Madonna has been touring with a phenomenal troupe of Roma musicians who made her aware of the discrimination toward them in several countries so she felt compelled to make a brief statement."
According to a recent report by the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, almost half of the 12 million Gypsies in Europe have faced discrimination in the last year alone, in situations ranging from housing, health care and even to education.

They face discrimination because a lot of them are involved in organized crime. They pick pockets, con people and steal from tourists especially. That's how they make a living.

It might be "sad" that they are discriminated agaist but many people like americans don't have to live next door to them and watch them route through peoples rubbish and watch them go out to their daily jobs (which is robbing innocent people).

On MSN in the music section they posted a picture of Madonna during the concert with her legs spread WIDE open in a very vulgar position. She's just asking for insults. Somebody wrote in the comments "Be careful with that pose, Madonna, a gypsy might pop out."
What woman regardless of her old age would want people looking into her crotch area ? It's very rude and not enjoyed by anyone. One man wrote "Close your legs. My eyes are melting."

They are discriminated against in Eastern Europe, but they do little to prevent it or make it stop. They have a reputation of being thiefs and a lot of them really are. Their children aproach people in the streets and ask for money and if you don't give it to them they say something nasty to you or run away with your purse. They have no manners what so ever, and their behavior is often sensed as threatning to people. The fact that they are dirty and dressed in rags does't help either, but it is not their fault they live in poverty.
What your Madge needs to do is live in Eastern Europe for a while like an ordinary person and deal with the Gypsies on the street. She would sing a different tune. It's impossible to find one who has a regular job OF ANY KIND. Stealing is their hobby, career and their life. Just ask some of the American department stores.

Ok this is really making me mad. When I was in Croatia last year, two gypsies came and touched my grandfather who is confined to his bed after a stroke, and dug under his pillow for money!! And then made a sob story when we came back and saw them leaving our yard! They are thieves and horrible human beings. Madonna needs to stfu. GAH. Had to get that off my chest =|

Indeed gypsies are discriminated, they are seen as uneducated people, criminals that don't work, beg, exploit their children, and make them get married from an early age, and indeed there are also some that are the opposite and don't deserve such treatment just because they are gypsies. it's funny that a few years ago western europe accused eastern europeans , especially romanians, where most of them live, for discriminating gypsies…and I think it's funny because now they have them invading their countries and finally got to understand who they really are…

My house got robbed by them, my purse was stollen, more than one friends of mine were beaten and sent to hospitals by them.I have so many examples to give… I am not discriminating or generalazing , I met gypsies at my university, which were very clever, and wanted to do something with their life and get out of their poverty life. But 90% of them are bad persons because this is the way their culture is.They don't believe in education, in rules, or work. they just steal and kill. They are offered chances to learn, free special seats for them in education, free rent, scolarships etc etc. But they don't take it.Because its easier to take what others have by working.In Romania or in any other country. I consider myself fair minded, but even in my advanced North American city, bands of gypsies are being caught running various planned scams or gypsy mob robberies of various businesses. When others work hard for their daily wage, they don't like others who feel entitled to steal it. Perhaps Romanians feel fringe criminal activity ruins their reputation, as most Romanians no doubt work very hard and are honest, and wish an untainted national pride. Maybe this type of feeling could have fed the boos? Not all Romanians are gypsys, and not all gypsys are Romanian, either.
Americans are worst with regard to their treatment of black people. We love discrimination and racism in this country… where Madonna is from. I don't remember her being a civil rights activist.

She did not say a word abt the same problem when she played Italy. Should I assume she found out abt it in between 2 gym sessions and a flight and she thought it would be a great opportunity to brand herself. Madonna's expertise in ethnic relations is as good as her acting.

I genuinely hate it when the ignorant preach. I doubt she's met a gypsy in her life. Where I live (Ireland) it's a problem, but in Romania, Poland, Lithuania and a lot of other Eastern European countries, where a lot of close friends of mine are from, it's a serious problem. I visited a friend in Romania, and I was genuinely scared on a couple of different occasions.
Well, There's Madonna's next project. Fund an organization that helps interested self-professed gypsys get off the streets by assisting them to break the nomadic cycle with education and support so they can settle down and earn a good living with skills they're not getting currently to do so. It's all they know how to do from how they were raised. If they knew differently, I'd bet most would do differently.

I don't think the word 'discrimination' applies here. It's more like justified dislike. We had a large extended family of gypsies in my city growing up, and I can't tell you how many times they made the paper for bilking old people, identity theft, counterfeiting, etc. They also force VERY young gypsy girls (as early as 9) to marry much older men. In our culture, that's pedophilia, and something I will never 'tolerate.' They were not living on the street, I knew of at least one nice home, yet they went unwashed for what must have been weeks. The smell was atrocious. The women wore layers and layers of gorgeous silk, and pounds of jewelry, but smelled worse than any homeless person ever could.
They need to take a good, hard look at their culture and behavior before they complain about discrimination. As a previous commenter said, some understood that and attended university. But for the others, trust me Perez, they are dangerous and stay far away!

It's a lifestyle they choose. A friend of mine wrote her final year university dissertation on gypsy travellers. She came across a 9 year old boy who was being sent to school for the first time in his life and he'd never even SEEN a pen. There are extremely high levels of illiteracy among gypsies, who tend to answer to one central patriarch, who is often the only person able to read and write in their small society. In the UK they often live outside the laws that everyone else is expected to live by, but have been known to demand state education, healthcare and yes, even housing (or areas of land to live on). It is no secret that crime goes up when a group of Gypsies moves to the area. This breeds lots of ill-feeling between communities, particularly communities predominantly made up of law-abiding citizens who pay their taxes, yet are subjected to fines for putting the wrong type of rubbish in their recycling bins. It is important to watch what you say and to not pre-judge and discriminate, but get all the facts before you jump on anyone for saying a bad word or two about them.
The Gypsy problem is similar to that of indigenous populations, in that centuries of survival skill sets don't fit well today and block many from functioning easily in mainstream society within accepted norms.

I grew up in an Eastern European country with a lot of romas and I have nothing but bad experiences with them. They drop out of school before 8th grade, they don`t work, they steal, they beg and the last thing on their mind is work. They live on all kinds of financial aid from the government and unlike most people in my country they wouldn`t even think about getting a job. But they are very good at complaining that`s for sure.
I hear from ( teacher ) friends that roma kids show up in school on Monday morning and the breadcrumbs from the Thursday snack is still in their hair. Maybe Madonna should send her kids to those schools and experience what Europeans do/did before speaking up in public.
At the same time I must say that there are some of them who have education and/or decent job but ( like her dancers ) but unfortunately they are the minority.
Yeah…sad but I grew up in Eastern Europe. I absolutely love the gypsies for their music, with their cymbals and accordions and all but they can be assholes. They really will try and rob you of a penny out of your pocket. But overall they are beautiful entertainers, they just need to prove that they are better by showing it.

Many Hungarians feel discriminated compared to Gypsies here in Hungary. We struggle and pay our heavy taxes to support them and provide them a normal standard of living. We in Central/Eastern Europe know Gypsies and their love of work and their respect for law. Madonna probably knows Gypsy musicians, who are usually fabulous (many of them also quite wealthy and live decently), but they are only rare exceptions with the rest of those Gypsies who make efforts to fit in and be useful members of society.
Mario, I believe the singular spelling is 'gypsy' and not gypsie. Plural would be gypsies.
when you go to any country in europe you are going to run into them and most of the time you have to be careful because they will beg and try to steal things from you. they will more than likely try to pickpocket, it has almost happened to me and it happens all the time

She had the gypsies on stage and they weren't booed while she was performing with them.
Part of the reason that she was booed was that some of the concert goers didn't believe what she was saying (including homosexual discrimination comments she made) and felt that this had nothing to do with her performance.

She earned her fortune through singing 'pop' songs with no artistic or social value, vulgarity and 'shock and awe' shows, not any particular vocal (or any other observable), ability. If it wasn't for the herd mentality of most teenagers, in this case female teenagers and professional marketing people, madonna would probably be serving coffee in a truckstop somewhere.

I think that people trying to teach us some lessons in morals should get their facts straight. We've done more than enough trying to support these people and have received nothing in return other than the cold shoulder from all the countries to which these people have migrated and in which they are riding the crime wave. By the way, each and every time I traveled to cities in Western Europe, I was slightly embarrassed to tell people i was Romanian. All the street corners in Barcelona, Paris and Milan are buzzing with Romanian gypsies, who have become an emblem of our country…You ride a buss in Barcelona and start to hear whispering of "game plans" in Romanian to pick pocket the tourists and you start to understand where all the hate comes from. Jeebus, I've been following readers' comments on gypsies since the first post about Madonna's preaching, and I must say I'm pretty much fascinated.
I haven't been to Europe and therefore have not encountered any gypsies, but I'm very intrigued by the reactions gypsies get out of people. I never would have imagined they were such a big problem! I mean, the "they throw their baby at you and pickpocket while you catch it" stunt left me astonished… not in a good way, obviously. I'm definitely going to research more on these Roma people.

Being from East Europa (now in Canada), I woud never discriminate a Roma if I met one in a party, a cafe, or any situation that feels safe. And I love their music and could totally attend a concert in a Roma village. This said, if I'm walking alone in a certain part of town and there is a gang of young Romas on the other side of the street, I'm forced to walk the other way because that can mean danger. When I say danger I mean, there is a reality of being attacked with knives by a gang. Street gangs are not a specific problem to Romas in the world, but you know, evil Roma gangs is a reality. You have films like Tony Gatliff showing Romas doing small theft and it's all presented as cute, and sometimes I feel like the horror stories are censored (use of violence). I'm sure the Romas working with Madonna are fine people, and to them the boos must have really hurt. I would never have booed like this, it's confusing a whole people with some bad ghettos.
If I never saw or heard from Madonna again; it would be too soon!

Re: betty_nono – sorry,:) my first language is not english. i hope u r not living in my county cuz then u dont see whats goin on in front of ur life. and the higher education is not free for everyone, and yea maybe im a shame but when my mother came home one day and 2 gypies where in my house and robbing us, oh yea, maybe im a shame, when they stole my wallet on the subway and when they put a knife on my high school classmate's neck to give his all money and cell phone in the daylight, yea, maybe i should think about myself, haha, who is working, and yes!! im payin my taxes! and poor me in my street lives a huge family and every week the police has to come for some reason…
I am agreeing with everyone hating the Gypsies.
Like many of you said, they are NOT hated on because they are Gypsies, they are hated on because they are taught from a very very verrrryy early age to steal, harm, lie, etc, to get money and more. They are the kind of people that have babies, so they can cut their limbs off (their children's) and then go on the street to beg for money. They also teach their children to smoke at 4 years old. They usually live in poor conditions BUUUTTT they have 5 satelite dishes and arms full of jewlery.
Many europeen gouvernments have tried to fix the Gypsy and "Roma people" issue, by giving them housing, food, cars, jobs… but can U guess what happened?? they've set fire to their buildings, cars, and stole MORE money from their employers.
I'll give u another example of what the gypsies (from Romania AND other europeen countries)have done. (just a little precision, they do NOT do this for survival reasons): Gypsies are always trying to improve their tactics on stealing. So what'd they think of?? lol They decided that it would be a great idea to hide someone in a suitcase and then to put that in the luggage compartment of a Coach. U can pretty much guess the rest.
Basicly, what i am trying to say, is that many gypsies are not the type u'd want to have sitting next to you on a plane, train, or bus. They don't need defending.
