A Sad Day

Filed under: Anglophilia > Geri Halliwell > Victoria Beckham > Mel B. > Melanie C. > Music Minute

74938921__opt.jpg

The music biz is in the crapper, but at least it's still alive and somewhat kickin. Record stores, on the other hand, are dead.

People (including us) just don't go to record stores anymore. They mainly get their music online. That's why Tower Records folded earlier this year and other chains are likely to follow.

We used to love going to record stores. Oh well, times change and so do we.

Reflective of a different climate, the Spice Girls have announced that their new Greatest Hits album won't be sold in traditional retail outlets. Instead, the record will only be available at Victoria's Secrets stores and at online retailers, like iTunes.

Them ladies must be getting mad money from Victoria's Secret!

The girls are also performing at the lingerie company's fashion show.

We'll buy our copy on iTunes. We don't have any need for a bra and panties - and neither do half the girls in Hollywood!

P.S. Just cuz we love the song so much, click here to watch Melanie C. perform This Time on This Morning this morning.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO STILL FREQUENTS RECORD STORES?

This really upsets me. I hate the digital music revolution. Yes, it's good that music is more portable than ever. But technology is faulty, and what if you burn so much music and "never get around" to backing it up on CDs? You're fucked, that's what.

This is the shits. I hate losing my albums and CDs.

I loved Tower Sunset. I was sad when it went out of business last year. But on the other hand, no one wants to pay $20.00 for a 10 song CD when they can get it for half the price online or at Best Buy.
It's just further proof that record labels need to take a look at themselves. Maybe take a lesson from Radiohead.

hey Perez, if you are some sort of "journalist" that you claim to be, you should learn how to correctly use grammar. "Record stores, on the other hand our dead"??? Are you serious?
The correct sentence would be "record stores on the other hand ARE dead"

The music industry is not in the crapper. It is thriving more than ever due to digital sales and the growing digital world. Get your facts right please before you start going on about an industry dying. You wouldn't have a job without the Music Industry.

  52. Fashionista says – reply to this

    52

I used to go to record stores when music was music and not most of the garbage that is being put out today. And before the convenience of the internet when you could just buy and download the one song worth listening to out of the other 11 pieces of crap on a record.

Now about the SG's "Greatest Hits"….is this going to be 12 different mixes of that same obnoxious "I tell you what I want, what I really really want" song???

And Perezita, do read what you write before you publish.

  53. Lowest common denominator says – reply to this

    53

Perez, record store chains have been struggling for well over a decade and Tower had been on the verge of bankruptcy for about that long. Stick to reporting gossip and leave business commentary to credible news outlets.

And those of you dipshits downloading music for free: you are stealing from struggling artists and putting millions of people out of jobs.

sucks for the workers at victoria's secret–they're going to be playing that album non-stop.

and yeah amoeba rocks. they're not going under any time soon.

  58. Cary says – reply to this

    58

Popular music is dying because it's moving too far away from the principles of music. Melody is long gone and has been replaced by short little note sequences that repeat over and over, either that or there is a long sort of recitation, just sort of speaking the words on different pitches. Harmony has been stripped down to some basic tired-out chord sequences, while the whole world of harmonic progression and variation is ignored and forgotten. Even rhythm is failing, because when it gets too eccentric, it's no longer rhythm. Most of this anemic music of today comes out of the drug haze in the recording studios and the personal substance-abuse nightmares of many of the recording stars. So what's the use? Music needs a new start.

We used to love going to record stores. Oh well, times change and so do we."

The self-professed champion of new music talking utter nonsense again. Tower folded because they didn't adapt. They made horrible business decisions, and while they might have tried to save face by blaming the state of the industry, it's their own damn fault.

Virgin Megastores is still going strong, as are indie stalwarts like Amoeba and Newbury Comics. To survive as a brick and mortar operation, you have to roll with the punches. Those that don't, fail. Those that do - like those I mentioned above - will be just fine.

Shame Perez can't ever offer an educated opinion. But that would require pulling himself away from the mirror and concentrating on something other than his untalented self.

  72. clifford says – reply to this

    72

Well, popular music is mostly bullshit and has been getting worse and worse since the 1980s. Who would want to pay for it? Maybe people will tire of being spoon-fed and actually "ask" for real "culture" for a change. Or, maybe not…

It's rather telling, of course, that the face on this blog is fully willing to admit his participation in the death of music stores, much less his utter lack of taste.

Emma is the only Spice Girl I still love. Her solo album, Free Me, was seriously good 60s pop, and definitely a more mature. Also, she doesn't look as plastic as the others, which is nice!

    75

Here in the UK, Virgin megastores will be re named as they have been sold to someone else, one we lost earlier in the year was Fopp…total bummer that was though cause Fopp was good, I used to frequent it cause it was worth it, the others are not, you can just buy all that stuff online and save £££ half the time too .

  76. Confucius says – reply to this

    76

The music industry failed to see the writing on the wall early on, and refused to jump on the mp3 bandwagon while they still could. Cat's out of the bag, and they're paying the price. The future waits for no one.

    77

Posh is such a poseur. Why is she the only one fakely posing in this pic here?
I'd like her if she'd grow up and just be herself, instead of lamely continuing to try to superficially market herself. That is so old.

  78. JJill says – reply to this

    78

Shouldn't they be called the Spice Old Ladies (with a lot of plastic surgery)? They weren't good when they tried to play this game the first time! Who wants to hear all of their beat old songs again?

  79. George's Dad says – reply to this

Is it just me or do all the Spice Women look wholesome except "Posh"? She looks she just came out of Mattel plastic mold for a Star Wars toy or something equally fake. What's with all the dumb posing all the time? Not pretty or even remotely attractive, Victoria. Someone needs to tell ya.

  84. British Babe says – reply to this

    84

    Re: No Spice please!

They might of only had "one or two one hit wonders", as you put it, in the US, but in the UK they've had 9 number one singles. These "ho's" have sold over 53 million records worldwide (so far)…..how many have you sold? They've won 14 different awards (BRIT awards x4, American Music Awards x3, MTV Europe Awards x3, MTV Video Music Award x1 and World Music Awards x3)…….how many have you won? I could go on about the film they released, the records they've broken etc etc, but I won't bother cos I think I've proved my point. You may not like them or their music but that's hardly a reason to slate them.

  85. Jasmine says – reply to this

    85

That does not make sense. They must be getting paid a lot of money from Victoria Secrets because artists do not care where there albums are sold and Perez was right about the decline in record stores but look at Wallmart who has been receiving huge increases in sales partly from Wallmart exclusive releases and people that just buy everything there.
