Cameron Diaz' latest film, The Box, blew it at the box office on Friday night!
Directed by Donnie Darko's Richard Kelly, the horror flick is only expected to open to a measly $7 mil over the weekend.
Pretty shitty for a movie that cost $25 million to make!!
And Cameron's not alone! MJ's This Is It continues to slide down the box office earnings, with the doc only expected to earn $13-$15 million by the weekend's close.
The only success story of the weekend so far?
Disney's A Christmas Carol, starring funnyman Jim Carrey is expected to earn $30-$35 million by Sunday, securing it in the number one spot at the box office.

'Where the hell do you get your information about MJ's movie??? E Online reported it to be the biggest grossing film bringing in 101 million worldwide just earlier this week. I agree with LV-Entergetic I think you purposely make it a point to discredit MJ's movie. It really does not matter, it is what it is, and its GREAT…I think you are posting your personal reviews..get the facts.

Actually perezpuss 25 million isn't that much for a movie today and it should more then make back what it cost in world viewing plus when it goes to dvd. As far as MJ's movie goes it's already made over 100 million worldwide and continues to make money and that also dosen't include dvd sales. Since Sony only paid 60 million for it they've more then made back their money plus a nice profit already. You just can't admit when your wrong you asshole.
A Christmas Carol cost 175 million $.
So it made a measly 17 % of its budget.
The box made 28 % of its budget.
Not too bad for a thriller.
Just admit that MJ's documentary is a success, Perez!
FYI, Once Sony makes back it's 60 million investment, on This Is It, plus the costs associated with the film such as prints and advertising, any more money will/has gone to the family (Katherine and the children) 90% and 10% to AEG.

A 14 Million dollar take in its 2nd week for This Is It is not a deep "slide down" in box office earnings. It represents a 30% or so decline from the previous weekend and this is less than expected from this type of "event movie". Usually 2nd week declines are closer to 50% or more. The film is a critical success with 80% of critics giving it a positive review and it may yet get a Best Documentary Oscar Nomination.
It is also neither the massive success some MJ fanatics would have you believe. It most likely will not make 100 million in America and although it should make 200 million worldwide this would not even place it among the top 20 films in 2009. Where are the legions of MJ fans if far less than 10 million Americans will see the film in theaters out of something like 300 million Americans and out of the billions worldwide only 20 million go to see This Is It in theaters?
The only reason MJ's movie is making money is because people want one last look at the freak when alive!

The box looks horrible. But I will eventually make its money back and will do really good as a rental and on dvd. The Michael Jackson movie does not have what they call legs. But it is still made a ton of money. Man who stare at goats was a horrible movie.

Considering it hasn't gotten enough (or any) P.R. -what do you expect? If it had gotten as much attention as any of the movies that DID earn a lot before opening, I'm pretty sure this one would be right up there as well. It's all in who the production companies are willing to promote, no doubt about it.
"This is it" broke the worldwide record last week for the biggest release ever at over $100 million dollars. Sony has made millions off of "rehersal footage of a musical genius at work".

Saw it yesterday. It was entertaining, but what sucks about it is that it is so overly done with unnecessary details, it gets *REALLY* annoying. Im so disappointed because they could have made a really good movie, but screwed it up jamming all kinds of unnecessary information in. Id say it gets 2 stars outta 5.

I don't understand how you think of MJ's documentary as a failure. It's already the highest grossing concert film ever. It's not a standard movie and considering it has an very exact audience it's performing extremely well.
Would you consider Madonnas Truth or Dare a bomb? By normal movie standpoints maybe but "this is it" has already made much more than that. And speaking of Madonna, how about her unsuccessful greatest hit? 5th week and it's number 68.

Re: budrose – Phenomenon is not the correct word to use. Incredibly successful for a "concert" (actually rehearsal) film and also for a documentary yes, but phenomenon no. The amount of money made does not qualify it as a phenomenon and as is the case with most movies it made less this week than last week and next week it ill make even less. It will have to make $250 million worldwide to even be one of the top 280 films of modern blockbuster times, and right now is not even one of the top 30 films of 2009. In fact it appears it will be the number 4 film in the US this weekend. Phenomenon get real.

I thought the same thing about the release being early until I found out from a movie site I go to that all 3 Santa Clauses, The Polar Express, and Elf all opened within the first 12 days of November (some even earlier than A Christmas Carol). Happy Holidays

the marketing for the box was a bit lame. using the saw's theme song to attact the viewers to watch this movie was a bad mistake. like taking Nightmare on Elm Street theme song to market The Stepfather…not good.
