The plastic surgeon blamed by many for the death of Kanye West's mother is beginning his media assault to attempt to clean up his image.
He's got a lot of work to do!
Jan Adams has lost multiple malpractice suits, has been arrested for DUI multiple times, has been accused of sexual assault and settled that case, and his ex-wife took out a restraining order against him.
Tonight, the shady doc will be on Larry King Live.
On Monday, he spoke to the Los Angeles Times for this interview, which ran today.
Adams speculates that Kanye's mom may have accidentally overdosed on painkillers.
The dirty Dr. also asserts, "When she left this office, there was no problem whatsoever."
Adams claims he knows "exactly" what caused Donda West's death but he is refusing to comment until he sees the coroner's report in a few weeks.
Of the multiple malpractice suits against him, Jan defends himself by saying, "Yes, there have been some malpractice suits, but 99% of them are what we in this business call nuisance suits."
Many of the suits, he claims, were the result of patients not being happy with the way a scar healed, though they had been warned about how it might look.
"When you look at the suits critically, what you find is those people who sue are those people who couldn't afford it in the first place," Adams says. " And so they're trying to recoup their money and they're looking for anything wrong."

I'm not saying the doc did or didn't do anything…I'm saying he has a point, plastic surgens get sued all the time for b.s. and there are serious risks involved with every surgery, if Kanye's mom was previously told by another doctor to not have the surgey then maybe she should've really listened. She took the risk and this is what ended up happening. I feel for her family, I hope she's in a better place, but shit happens and this is a tragedy, but I wouldn't point the fingers at the doc until all the evidence is on the table.

Doctors get sued all the time. Even the BEST doctor has been sued, it comes with the territory. While the passing of Kanye's mother is tragic, people need to understand that there are risks with surgery. Every time you go under anesthesia something can go wrong and it is not always the doctor's fault. If Dr Jan was in fact negligent, I hope the truth comes out and he pays for his mistake. However, people need to not rush to judgement and understand this is a risk that comes with surgery. Perhaps people should not be so quick tohave medically un-necessary procedures….hopefully time will show what really went wrong.

Sorry, but he's 100% correct. There are tons and tons of malpractice lawsuits that doctors have to deal with that are pure bullshit. Scars that don't heal EXACTLY as the patients want them, they'll sue. Getting back to work in five weeks as opposed to the originally proposed four weeks, they'll sue. And people who can't afford the surgery so they sue to make up for it, totally commonplace! While he's being dodgy by blaming her for a drug overdose, you can't judge him based on his previous suits. At least say he's an asshole for the DUIs and the wife-beating report!
No offense, but why did she go to him if he is not certified, and he has several malpractice suits? Her son is rich. Can't he afford a proper doctor for her, or at least have the resources to research this guy?

He's right about the litigation piece. All kinds of folks see the court sytem as a way to play the lottery. If the smallest problem happens during my extremely risky (and in her case, elective) surgery, they'll sue for tens of millions of dollars even when they aren't worth 2 cents as individuals. Physicians see malpractice insurance rates go through the ceiling and we end paying more for it in the form of higher fees for legitimate medical care. Sucks.

i don't think he did it. donda had heart complications from the beginning. maybe it was just bad luck that she had to come to him. it was her fault that she died though. if she would have listened to the other doctor, she wouldn't have died. what's the point of gettin surgery at her age?

Perez- try doing some research on malpractice suits and how common they are, espcially in areas like plastic surgery. Malpractice suits are the reason it is so hard to find OBGYN's today, the cost of malpractice insurance combined with the frequency of suits is outrageous. And how many of those suits was he found "guilty" in as opposed to settled or had his insurance pay out? He might be a shadey dude, but honestly, way to judge.

Plastic Surgeons have some of the highest liability insurance rates in the business (although nothing compared to bariatric!) There is risk involved in any surgery. The patient knows this going in. A patient dying as a result of surgery does NOT immediately mean that there was gross neglect on the part of the surgeon. It is tempting to blame someone when a person dies, but the truth is that there may just have been bad luck. wait until the coroner's report comes in.
She wanted the surgery, she knew the possibilities. I don't feel that badly since this was an elective surgery. She could have lost weight safely, and everything would have been fine. If this was something that was a necessary surgery, maybe I would be upset.
I'm sure the ony reason this happened was because George Bush doesn't care about black people. Ooops! A black man performed the surgery! How will we ever blame whitey!!??!?!

Dr. Adams is correct regarding nuisance suits. My wife is a doc and has had two malpractice suits against her. One was because another doctor dropped an instrument on a patients left foot. The patient sued my wife as well(who did not drop te instrument) for painin her RIGHT foot. Also, she was sued for a baby born with CP. Well, this patient never saw a doctor until she was brought to the emergency room to deliver. By the time my wife saw this patient, the baby was already in distress. Not my wifes fault, but she had to settle anyways.
SO, go BLOW yourself. You don't know ANY of the facts, yet you side with KANYE. Surgery is dangerous. People die.
As devastating as this whole situation is and as much as my heart goes out to Kanye and his family, coming from a family where one of my parents is a doctor, patients sue doctors all the time for things that were not their fault. My mom has been sued several times over things that were not even in her control. I think that while it may something that his ex wife took out a restraining order on him, it doesn't always reflect on someone's character. I think we should give him a chance to defend himself.

I'm not going to jump to any conclusions here. I spoke with my regular doctor about how to go about finding a plastic surgeon and he told me to not necessarily be scared away by a doctor with a few malpractice lawsuits pending; that it doesn't always indicate a poor doctor…it may mean that the doctor takes on challenging cases.
as the relative of a dr. i know how much malpractice insurance these guys have to pay. so what if he has had dwi, as long as he wasn't drunk .. he is a well respected and busy surgeon. board certified does not mean jack….

Nuisance suit! Yeah, I would say it's a bit of a nuisance when a surgical sponge is left in a patient's body after surgery! Or how ’bout protruding intestines 6 months after a "tummy tuck"? The REAL NUISANCE HERE IS DR. ADAMS who needs to have his own surgery - his hands removed and a lobotomy - and quickly, before anyone else is maimed or slaughtered!

The bottom line is that this guy is NOT board certified to perform plastic surgery. Never has been, never will be. He is just another guy with an MD who thinks they can do these procedures and make a quick buck. The public is duped all the time by these guys, and they are the ones who suffer.
From the reports I have read, Ms West went to a "real" plastic surgeon first, who told her that she would need to get medical clearance from her internist before he would even consider doing any surgery. She did not like that answer, so went shopping until she found this charlatan who only wanted her money and did not care about all her associated medical problems.
It is a tragedy that plays out DAILY in the US. I am deeply saddened for Ms. West and her family, but I hope this high profile incident sheds some light and instructs the public in the importance of doing a little research on your plastic surgeon instead of just taking his/her word for his/her qualifications.
A good place to start is www.plasticsurgery.org- the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Only surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery are allowed to be members. If your doctor is not listed here, I would proceed with extreme caution.
If you do your research you'll find that it's rare for a plastic surgeon to be sued. The reason being is that it's difficult to get a judge and jury to be sympathetic because the victim underwent ELECTIVE, COSMETIC, ENHANCEMENT. So, for Dr. Jan Adams to have a string of medical malpractice suits truly says something negative about his level of competence.

The (other) woman who was on CNN the last week went on his TV show and seemed to get the surgery for FREE…and then she sues when the incisions don't heal properly??? It looked like she didn't even give her body the time to heal before she went back to her day job!

As a surgeon myself, this case and the media hype has greatly saddended and frustrated me. I'd like to comment on a few of the issues here.
-First off, I feel for the West family in this completely unnessesary tragedy.
-The fact is true that malpractice suits in this nation are creating our current medical insurance crisis and that most lawsuits against physicians are unwarrented and thrown out, or settled, and are NOT do to any fault or negligence by the physicians. This is especially true in plastic surgery cases, where many patients have unrealistic expectations of outcomes. DO NOT assume a settled malpractice case means a bad doc. It's a bad system.

-Second, the likely reason for Ms West's death is related to drug interactions, medical history, or both. She should have had medical clearance for such a major surgery, elective or not, and that may come into play in determining if Dr Adams was negligent in her care. BUT, the idea that she overdosed on narcotics is NOT implausible. She had respiratory failure at home, the day after surgery. Not a lot of things cause respiratory failure post-surgery- pulmonary embolism is one and is likely after surgery and NOT negligence, a heart attack is another, related to her possible past medical history that we don't know about as of yet, and narcotic overdose is another. WAIT FOR THE CORONERS REPORT. This is not "guilty until proven innocent" people. Remember that.
-And finally, the media has focused on issues that are not related to this man's ability to practice medicine per-se (see malpractice suits reference above if you balk at this statement). His DUIs and social problems are separate and only reflect that he's kind of a shady guy. BUT, that does NOT mean he is a bad surgeon that directly caused Ms West to die post-op.
If the coroner's report returns and he is VINTICATED for any wrong doing, I fully expect the press to UNSLANDER his career and apologize.
LET THE BOARD OF MEDICINE DECIDE IF HE'S FIT TO PRACTICE. DON'T PRETEND TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT IN THESE VERY COMPLICATED CIRCUMSTANCES.
I would not rush to judgement on this doctor until the coroner's report comes in. I'm not saying he isn't responsible, I'm also not saying he is. What I will say is that he is right when he says doctors get a lot of nuisance suits by people who aren't pleased with the aesthetic outcome, even though they are warned it can happen. So, I wouldn't take the fact that he has malpractice suits filed against him as making him an automatic quack, nor even the fact that someone died after having sugery from him. Surgery is risky no matter what you are having done, which is why they warn you of the risks and make you sign papers stating you are aware of the risks. It's not like getting a tooth cleaning…they are cutting you open. So, don't rush to judgement on this doctor before the facts are even in.
Yeah he may seem like a creep but he is only partially to blame for the death of Kanye West's mother. She had been turned down by at least one other plastic surgeon because she was a health risk. It was her decision to undergo the surgery even though she knew there was a risk. Therefore, she needs to take some of the blame for her own death.

As much as I get the feeling that this doc is a total douche bag, a doctor isn't the ONLY person in the OR when someone is being operated on. I almost died in surgery 4 years ago and it wasn't because of the doctor, it was because of the anesthesiologist. There was 10 people in my OR…all of whom could have screwed up. Nurses, doctors, anesthesiologists…
Until it's known what it was *exactly* that lead to Dr. West's passing, you can't place all of the blame on just one person. Even if he does seem like a shady prick.
Did she have an allergic reaction to medication she was given in the OR? Did she stroke out? Did she develop a bleed that went unseen? Did she have high blood pressure? Was she on medication that made surgery risky? If she had some pre-existing condition that made this type of procedure dangerous, did she inform Dr. Adams? Patients lie all the time. If *he* KNEW about something that could put her life in danger and went ahead with the operation, then YES, the good doctor here should be held accountable. But it's just not possible to make any judgments at this point since no one really knows what happened.

There are a lot of people out there that want something for nothing so you really have to look at judgments against the doc from trial & settlements. However, a lot of doctors will settle a suit under 30k to make it go away as only amounts 30k & over are reported to the medical board. Also, the doctor doesn't pay the patient, it is the insurance company that pays Perez. Kanye's mom shouldn't have had surgery in the first place. The first doctor she went to wouldn't clear her for surgery so she went looking for a doc that would. That should have been the first clue that this guy has no ethics. The doc is saying that he thinks she probably died from a heart attack, pulmonary embolus or drug overdose. I would blame him if she died from a heart attack or PE because that would show that a) he maybe shouldn't done the surgery because of a heart condition (don't know why the first doc wouldn't clear her) & b) he potentially didn't give her the right meds to prevent the PE. However, let's see what the coroner has to say before we blame the "good" doctor. I will say that Kany's mom is at least partially to blame because she knew that she wasn't a candidate for surgery.

Having worked in the medical malpractice insurance industry for a number of years, I can tell you that many good doctors will be sued over the course of their history. A lot of the suits ARE nuisance suits. No surgery is without risks. Patients see doctors as "God figures" and expect that they will have zero complications. I feel sorry for anybody who suffers complications from surgery. HOWEVER, maybe this is a wake up call for our society to stop being so driven by image/looks, and stop having non-medically necessary surgery for aesthetic purposes.

He is totally right. Now a days people wanna sue for everything. When it comes to surgery and medical stuff, anything can go wrong, you have no way of telling how a persons body is going to respond. That's why you have to sign so many papers. Plastic surgery is not a NECESSITY. You CHOOSE to have it done, so deal with the consequences!
