He actually resigned from his senate seat because beginning January 1st, there will be a 2-year wait for any Senator who resigns to become a lobbyist.

He did it so he could just skip the new ethics regulations imposed by Democratic congress and start working for corporations, etc. immediately and make more money for himself and his Republican friends.
