30% Of College Students Relying On ADHD Drugs For Good Grades

adderall

Sadly, for many college students, the picture above isn't a joke.

Professor Alan DeSantis of the University of Kentucky has been tracking the use of non-prescribed ADHD drugs or "study drugs" by the student body and has turned up some alarming results.

Pills like Adderall or Ritalin are used by HALF of all juniors and seniors in college, and 30% of the entire student body.

Students have placed the risk of using the drug as "slightly more dangerous than the soft drink Mountain Dew and nowhere near as dangerous as drinking beer and smoking." The reality, however, is that taking ADHD drugs WITHOUT a diagnosis can cause "significant problems both in terms of thinking, mood problems, maybe even functionality."

Not only is a drug like Adderall habit forming, but the federal government lists it as a schedule II drug, meaning it has "the highest abuse potential and dependence profile of all drugs that have medical utility."

Students seem oblivious to the risks and insist taking the drugs help their performance. Believe it or not, they aren't alone either.

Some scientists advocate legalizing "safe and effective" cognitive enhancement drugs, citing that the "new methods of improving our brain function…will benefit both the individual and society."

We learned a long time ago (was it kindergarten) that you should NEVER take someone else's prescriptions and we'll stick by that!

Study: 1 In 4 Adults Exaggerate ADHD Symptoms To Get Medication

web-hiv-pills.jpg

Faking sick isn’t just for middle-school kids trying to cut class!

A new survey found that nearly 25% of adults fake or exaggerate ADHD symptoms in order to get prescribed Adderall.

For people with ADHD, drugs like Adderall and Ritalin give users a sense of calm. For people without ADHD, the drugs basically act as mental performance enhancers, allowing them to concentrate better.

The problem with this is that doctors are trying harder and harder to avoid giving healthy people these drugs, which means that they are enacting stricter protocols for diagnoses, potentially making it harder for people who actually have ADHD to get the medicine they need.

The bottom line: Don’t fake your way into a prescription — you could be hurting someone else in the process!

Exercise Can Improve ADHD

Exercise Can Improve ADHD

Sometimes the best medicine is a little fresh air…

Or at least that’s what new research on ADHD says.

A growing body of research suggests that exercising outside can have a positive effect on kids with ADHD.

Said researcher Dr. David L. Katz:

“When my colleagues and I conducted a study of our school-based physical activity program, ABC for Fitness, one of the findings was a 33% reduction in medication use for ADHD! I have long said that rambunctiousness in kids is normal and should be treated with recess, not Ritalin.”

Doctors recommend that kids be active outside at least twice a week to help out with ADHD.

If your kid has ADHD, kick them out of the house a few times a week and get them moving!

Celebrity Nutritionist Lisa DeFazio Answers Your Questions!

Lisa,

My son is 6 years old, has ADHD and PDD. He is a very picky eater. He does not want to try anything new. Even if I eat it to show him it's OK, he still doesn't try it.

I’ve tried having him help me with the cooking as suggested in the video, however, that does not work with him. He will say it smells good but then does not even dare to go near it. He would rather go a night without eating before he eats something he doesn't like or want. We find ourselves bargaining with him, trying to get him to eat at least half of something, rather than all of it. For example, I made ziti noodles and boiled some chicken, cut it in cubes, and added cheesy Ragu Alfredo sauce and mixed all together. He liked the idea that it was cheese. And seemed to actually like it. But he won't eat chicken on its own and cannot make the connection that chicken nuggets and chicken from the freezer is the same thing.

I want to know what to do with super picky eaters. I want him to eat vegetables. I want him to want seconds at dinnertime. I am a picky eater myself, but was never as picky as my son….

Any tips, pointers, tricks, suggestions?

-Jennifer

Jennifer,

Well, I am going through the same thing with my 5 year old picky-eating son! Here is my advice based on both my professional knowledge, and experience as a Mom! You are doing a great job by introducing foods, but some kids just will not eat them. So, do not stress out about it! As long as he is getting all of the food groups, he is an appropriate weight and not malnourished, relax.

My son will not eat chicken alone either. The texture is the problem. Some kids like softer textures like ground meat or chicken mixed in a meat sauce. If your son likes Alfredo sauce, mix in the chicken with it, but cut it up in tiny pieces. Here are food groups and things that may work: Fruits–bananas, apples without skin, fruit cocktail; Vegetables–carrots and ranch dip, tomato sauce on pasta and pizza, well cooked veggies that are soft; Protein–scrambled eggs, cheese pizza, ground beef in a meat sauce on pasta, yogurt, hot dogs, chicken nuggets (baked, all natural), hamburger, macaroni and cheese, Alfredo sauce, Progresso Italian Wedding meatball soup, cream cheese, Vanilla Ensure meal replacement shake.

My protein tip, use any ground meat like ground beef, turkey or chicken, cut it up in small pieces, mix with any sauce like spaghetti sauce or Alfredo sauce or mix the cooked meat with cooked rice. Starches and carbohydrates are not a problem for picky eaters–try mashed potatoes (cut up ground meat or a hot dog very small and mix in mashed potatoes), pasta, soft bread, bagel, rice, crackers, etc.

When my son does not want to eat I give him a Vanilla Ensure Meal replacement, which is healthier than a fast food meal! Over time you son's food choices will expand and evolve. Give him a daily liquid or gummy multivitamin, and a Pediasure or Ensure Meal replacement if he will not eat. As long and the doctor says he is healthy, blood work is normal, no anemia, and he is a healthy weight, go with the flow! I do not believe in force feeding kids, this is how many children today are overweight!
