Dohn High School in Cincinnatti is pulling out all the stops to get their kids to school.
The attendence and graduation rates for the school are abysmal. Last year only 14 percent of students graduated and most of the students are very poor.
The $40,000 incentive program rewards seniors with $25 Visa gift cards for attending class (on time) and staying out of trouble. Underclassmen get $10 gift cards. Good students also receive $5 in a savings account.
School CEO Ken Furrier brushes criticism aside, believing he and his staff are on the right track:
Our student population is 90 percent poverty. Money is important to them. We can’t teach them if they’re not here.
I think the thing that many parents have to realize is that these kids arev ery poor. They don’t have all the benefits suburban kids have.
The new program has 15 percent spike in attendence but is still classified as an "emergency school."
Do U think this program is a good idea?
