A two monorail train crash at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, FL, early Sunday morning resulted in the death of a Disney monorail driver!!
Awful!
The crash was the first deadly accident for the theme park’s monorail system in its 38 year history!
One of the monorail trains was making its last stops around the park at 2 a.m. after the annual Independence Day fireworks show when the monorail was struck by another train with 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg behind the wheel.
Wuennenberg was pronounced dead on the scene after not responding to passengers and firefighters alike. The driver and 6 passengers on the monorail that was hit by Wuennenberg’s train escaped the accident with only minor injuries.
The park reopened on Sunday, but the monorail will be closed until the investigation of the accident is complete.
Disney has released the following statement regarding the 4th of July tragedy:
“Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to his family and those who have lost a friend and coworker. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the appropriate next steps.”
We wonder what the real cause of the accident was???
