Sebastian Stan won’t stand for insensitivity.
The Avengers: Endgame star sticks up for people in the real world just as much as he does while portraying a Marvel hero on the silver screen!
In a resurfaced interaction from the Berlin Film Festival, which took place back in February, the 42-year-old took questions about his film A Different Man, which also stars Adam Pearson. If you haven’t seen it, he plays a character who suffers from neurofibromatosis — a rare genetic condition which causes tumors to grow “anywhere in the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and nerves,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
Sebastian’s character undergoes an experimental reconstructive procedure, leaving him to look like the Sebastian we all know. Except while he may only grapple with the condition for the movie, Adam battles it in real life.
During the Q&A, a journalist made the mistake of referring to the condition as beastly. The journalist asked:
“What do you think happens after the transformation from this so-called beast, as they call him, to this perfect man?”
And the I, Tonya star took the opportunity to educate the asker and anyone listening. He responded:
“I have to call you out a little bit on the choice of words there. I think part of why the film is important is because we often don’t have maybe even the right vocabulary.”

Acknowledging that the reporter was Berlin-based and had a different native tongue, he added:
“I think it’s a little more complex than that. And obviously there [are] language barriers and so on, but you know, ‘beast’ isn’t the word, I think.”
Good on him! The Apprentice star added:
“I think to some extent it shows us that’s one of the things the film is saying. We have these preconceived ideas and we’re not really educated on how to understand this experience … The things that you’re saying about him at the beginning, that’s your interpretation. One might have a different interpretation of what he’s going through. That might not be it. It might’ve been just for you. I can’t really speak to that. I think it’s just one of the things I love about the movie.”
Good on him for taking a moment to help do some of that educating! He left off:
“It’s that he’s offering you a way to look at it, and hopefully if you can have the same objective point of view while you’re experiencing the film. Then maybe you can pick apart initial instincts that you have and maybe those aren’t always the right ones.”
