From Drugs To Murder: Hollywood's Darkest Moments

Hollywood's Darkest Moments

The City of Angels has a whole new meaning after this…

Hollywood may seem like the place to be. The sun’s always shining. There’s a celebrity practically everywhere you look. Fame, fortune, glitz, and glam. Who wouldn’t want that??

But under the blinding spotlights and swaying palm trees lies a much more sinister reality! From disturbing deaths — the details of which will keep you up at night for years to come — to terrifying mysteries, viral car chases, devastating drug use, and so much more, there’s a darkness most don’t dare speak of…

Take a look at some of the most grim moments in Hollywood history (below).

Rob & Michele Reiner

It’s one of the most devastating true crime stories in recent Hollywood history. One minute, Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were celebrating the holiday season with their friends at Conan O’Brien‘s Christmas party, and the next — literally, the next morning — they were found murdered in their home… and their son Nick was arrested for their deaths!

Horrifyingly, it was their daughter Romy who arrived at their home to check on them on December 14, 2025, after their massage therapist alerted her to trouble. She went inside the home and found her father dead, and fled the home without realizing her mother was also dead inside. Rigor mortis had already set in, and their bodies appeared to have been “butchered” by a “mad man,” per TMZ reports. A sight no daughter should have to see.

Hours later, their son Nick — whom they’d been arguing with at the Christmas party — was located by Exposition Park in downtown Los Angeles and arrested. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including the use of a knife, and he pleaded not guilty to both counts.

According to reports, the screenwriter was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder back in 2020, and his meds had recently changed, allegedly worsening his erratic behavior. Nick has pleaded not guilty, and a trial is still to come.

Katy Perry’s Ex Johnny Lewis

Katy Perry‘s ex-boyfriend Johnny Lewis was found dead in the most horrific of circumstances.

Back in September 2012, police were called to a Los Angeles home after a neighbor reported hearing a woman screaming and told officers that a man had jumped over a fence from a nearby property, assaulted a painter and homeowner, and jumped back toward the first home.

Johnny was found dead in the driveway… and while his death was ruled accidental (meaning there was no evidence that he was pushed or tried to die by suicide), it is believed he was the reason for the dark scene found inside the home.

Inside, an elderly woman, later identified as Catherine Davis (around 81 years old), and her cat were discovered dead. The home appeared to be ransacked. It turns out she was his landlord — and police believe Johnny killed her!

Catherine was known in the area for running the Writers’ Villa, a bed-and-breakfast for rising performers, directors, and writers, in her home. The actor previously lived there in 2009, and he had recently moved back in before this incident.

Authorities alleged the Sons of Anarchy star beat the woman and the cat to death before running outside and getting into an altercation with a neighbor and the neighbor’s handyman, who were both injured. He then ran back into the three-story home and seemingly fell off the roof or balcony.

Before this tragic ending, Johnny had dealt with a string of drug-related arrests and had recently been released from jail, per CBS News. However, it was ruled out that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs during this — this according to an autopsy report released that November. He also had nail marks on both sides of his neck and suffered partial strangulation. Catherine reportedly died by manual strangulation and blunt force trauma to her head.

Katy and Johnny dated from 2005 to 2006. A source told Us Weekly that they had “good times” together but that the Raise Your Voice star was “trouble” and the pop star “had to separate from him … to get ahead and focus on her career.” The insider added:

“It’s really sad. She could never help him and couldn’t [let herself] go in that direction.”

But their time together was “a time in her life she cherishes” and she was said to be “devastated” over his death. Her songs The One That Got Away and Circle the Drain are said to be inspired by him.

Menendez Brothers

Menendez Brothers Claim To Have NEW Evidence Of Sexual Abuse 8 Months Prior To Shooting Their Parents

This captivated the world the moment it happened and it continues to this day.

On a now-infamous summer night, everything changed for the Menendez brothers. It was August 20, 1989, when Erik and Lyle stormed into their family home with shotguns and murdered their parents, Jose and Kitty.

They claimed they killed their parents in self-defense after experiencing years of alleged sexual abuse from their father. Drugs were not a factor. But as they awaited trial, they relished in their newfound freedom from their parents — going on an approximately $1 million (!!!) spending spree in just about six months, cashing in on luxury cars, watches, clothes, and trips. To an outsider, the young suspects were living a grand life in the prestigious neighborhood of Beverly Hills. And the unnatural juxtaposition between the lavish lifestyle and grim crime made the case media gold!

Their trial was televised as they recounted the abuse in graphic detail. However, a jury ultimately couldn’t reach a verdict and they had to do the trial all over again. This time, they were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

Interest surged once again for their case after Netflix released Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in 2024. The scandal captivated everyone — but this time, many looked at the case with a new perspective.

Calls to revise the brothers’ sentence skyrocketed — and amounted to real legal action. Just weeks after the release, the Los Angeles County District Attorney at the time, George Gascón, recommended they be resentenced to 50 years to life in prison, and six months later, a judge approved the rec, making them immediately eligible for parole. However, in August ’24, with new District Attorney Nathan Hochman in charge, parole officials determined they weren’t ready.

They attempted trying other routes, such as a petition to overturn their convictions (which didn’t work) or to get clemency from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has ordered a 90-day comprehensive evaluation to determine if they pose a risk to the public and evaluate their rehabilitation, per NBC News. A result has not been shared at this time. For now, they remain behind bars.

O.J. Simpson

Another trial that had everyone glued to their TV! And it involved one of the most famous families to date: the Kardashians!

O.J. Simpson was a widely successful NFL star turned actor best known for movies The Naked Gun and Capricorn One. But everything changed when his ex-wife was found dead.

Here’s the backstory. O.J. married Nicole Brown in 1985, and they welcomed kids, Sydney and Justin, together. But they called things off and divorced just years later in 1992. Tabloids around this time reported allegations of an affair and drug use on O.J.’s part, but O.J. always denied any illicit substance abuse. Two years later, tragedy struck on June 12, 1994, after Nicole and her family enjoyed dinner at an El Lay restaurant. After Nicole’s mother left behind a pair of glasses, their 25-year-old waiter, Ron Goldman, showed up at Brown’s home that evening to return them. But around midnight, both Nicole and Ron were found stabbed to death at her house.

O.J. was in the city that night, but he took a late flight to Chicago and wasn’t questioned by police until he returned the next day. However, he wasn’t immediately arrested.

Days later, June 17, will go down in history as one of the most iconic true crime moments in pop culture. Why? Whether you saw it in person or were among the 95 million Americans watching live, or have relived footage in the years since, almost everyone can recall images of the slow-speed police chase the athlete led the authorities on that day! All in his white Ford Bronco!

Simpson eventually surrendered and was arrested. His trial in 1995 yet again captivated the world as his defense attorneys — including Robert Kardashian — argued he was wrongly accused. Meanwhile, prosecutors believed he was a controlling husband and accused him of abusing his wife. As evidence? They pointed to the fact that blood from the crime scene was found in his car and home, and that he was unaccounted for for more than an hour on the night of the deaths.

During the trial, prosecutors asked him to try on a pair of gloves believed to be worn by the killer. They didn’t seem to fit correctly, and his defense attorney famously used that to his advantage, saying:

“If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.”

O.J. was acquitted of all charges. But in 1997, he was found liable for wrongful death in the double murder, according to a civil jury. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages to the families.

He ultimately landed in jail after a 2007 Las Vegas arrest for leading a group of men into a hotel/casino and stealing sports memorabilia, which he claims was his, at gunpoint.

Years later, in Nicole’s diaries that were discovered and released in a 2024 documentary, she detailed over 60 incidents of domestic abuse she suffered from O.J. Awful.

O.J. died of cancer on April 10, 2024 in Las Vegas.

Phil Hartman

Beloved Saturday Night Live star Phil Hartman was tragically killed in his sleep in a devastating murder-suicide by his wife of 10 years.

Phil starred on SNL for eight seasons and was nicknamed “Glue” by his cast mates for holding the show together. He was also famous for his role as anchor Bill McNeal on NewsRadio and for voicing several characters on The Simpsons, including Troy McClure. He and his wife, Brynn, shared two kids, Sean and Birgen.

But on May 27, 1998, tragedy struck. The evening started normal enough. Brynn went out to dinner with her friend, TV producer Christine Zander, on May 27. According to Christine, Brynn had two drinks and “didn’t talk about any problems” at home. Two hours later, Brynn went back home and got into an argument with her husband. His friend and attorney Steven Small said, per People, that during the conversation the comedian “made it very clear that if she started using drugs again, that would end the relationship.” Steven said:

“She had to get amped up to get his attention, and when she got amped up, he would simply go to sleep. He would withdraw. And in the morning he’d wake up, and everything would be fine.”

But sadly, this time, he’d never wake up…

Phil was killed in his sleep after Brynn shot him three times — twice in the head and once on his right side — with a .38 handgun in the early morning hours of May 28. He was just 49. Their kids were asleep in their rooms during the murder. Sean later told police he heard sounds like “the slamming of a door” when his father was shot, a source close to the family told People.

After the murder, Brynn called her friend Ron Douglas — then went to his home in Studio City. She admitted the killing, but he didn’t believe her until she showed him the gun. He ultimately convinced Brynn to go back home, and he followed her there. Once he was inside and saw Phil’s body, he called the cops.

However, while he was on the phone, Brynn locked herself in her bedroom. When officers entered the home, she died by suicide while lying in bed next to her dead husband. Just horrific. Her son Sean was outside, and Birgen was being escorted out of the home when she died.

According to the New York Times, Brynn had alcohol, cocaine, and antidepressants in her system on the night of the murder-suicide. She’d struggled with alcohol and cocaine use — and had recently started drinking again after being sober for almost a decade. Wow. So very sad.

Sid Vicious & Nancy Spungen

This was truly such a tragic love story. Rock star Sid Vicious met his groupie-turned-girlfriend Nancy Spungen in 1977 in London’s punk scene. They quickly became inseparable, but their relationship spiraled into a toxic, co-dependent bond fueled by heavy drug use, volatility, and obsession. Things were so toxic, friends and bandmates even tried to get them to split up early on! Wow… that says a lot.

Things turned gruesome in August 1978 when they moved to NYC and made a home at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan. Sid’s band the Sex Pistols had disbanded by then and Nancy was acting as the bassist’s manager.

It was a wild time for the pair, and ended under horrific circumstances on October 11 after they decided to throw a party in their tiny hotel room. According to reports, Sid took about 30 tablets of Tuinal, a barbiturate mix, and was then comatose for most of the night. The next morning, according to The Guardian, Sid called police, saying he found Nancy dead. Nancy was found in her underwear on the floor bleeding from a knife wound in her abdomen. Terrifying.

While the musician initially said he’d killed her, he later walked it back, insisting he didn’t remember anything.

Just days after he was let out on bail, he attempted to die by suicide. After being in prison for a few months, he was let out on bail again on February 1, 1979. His mother reportedly purchased heroin for him at the time, which he accidentally overdosed on. He was found dead the day after his release.

D4vd

D4vd Enters Plea -- And Demands Immediate Preliminary Hearing!

This is one of the most recent and gut-wrenching true crime stories to come out of Hollywood.

It all started back in early 2024 when 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez was reported missing three times — and she was just 13 when the first report was made. So young. A missing person poster from around this time said she was last seen around February 14.

Starting in January of that year, Celeste had been seen hanging out with the musician D4vd, including on Twitch. Despite their massive age gap — and the fact she was a minor — they were said to be in a relationship. Friends and family were SO concerned… Little did they know how dark things would soon get.

Horrifyingly, just one day after Celeste would’ve turned 15, her body was found dismembered and decomposing in the back of a Tesla at a police impound yard! And the owner of the car? It was registered to the rapper!

According to reports, the car had been parked not far from where D4vd had been living in the Hollywood Hills. It was later taken to a police impound yard, where an employee noticed an awful smell.

At the time, the Romantic Homicide vocalist was on tour, which he later cancelled. He attempted to lay low for a while as an investigation continued — leading to his arrest on suspicion of killing the teenager in April 2026.

He was charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances in the homicide, as well as lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, and mutilating a body. Authorities say they also found a “significant amount” of child sexual abuse images on his phone (it’s unclear if those materials feature the teen).

Per reports, although an initial toxicology screening of Celeste’s remains had reportedly shown a “presumptive positive” for benzodiazepines, methamphetamines and MDMA, subsequent drug screenings determined methamphetamine was “inconclusive” and MDMA was NOT detected. Regardless, neither drugs nor alcohol were determined to have contributed to her death. The cause of death was described as “2 penetrating wounds of the torso with smooth edges that may represent sharp force injuries. The wound — [3/4 inch length and 1.5 inches deep] — on the upper abdomen penetrates the liver, and the wound on the left chest — [9/16 inch length and 2 inches deep] penetrates one of the left intercostal spaces, with disruption of the adjacent ribs’ cortical surfaces.”

If convicted, he could face the death penalty. This case is still ongoing, and no conclusion has been made at this time. D4vd has pleaded not guilty to the charges in connection with Celeste’s death.

Phew.

And that’s just a handful of some of the darkest Hollywood stories! Makes you think differently about the place, doesn’t it??
