In “not surprising at all news,” the death of Osama bin Laden last night set a new TPS (tweets per second) record on Twitter.

The social networking site was flooded with comments (some which were praise for Jack Bauer) all pertaining to the death of the terrorist mastermind that attempted to destroy this country’s spirit ten years ago. Between 10:45 p.m. ET and 2:20 a.m, there was an average of 3,000 bin Laden-related tweets per second, peaking at 11:00 p.m. when that figure reached 5,106 TPS.

Just to give you an idea of how huge this is: On Friday, the Royal Wedding’s highest numbers were 3,966 TPS. February├óΓé¼Γäós Super Bowl peaked at 4,064 TPS and the earthquake and tsunami tweets from Japan were close but never quite exceeded 5,000 TPS.

However, there is one all-time Twitter record Osama could not beat: this past New Year’s Eve in Japan, when Twitters piled up 6,939 TPS.

It surely is a year to celebrate now!
