Families Of Newtown Victims To Split $7.7 Million In Donations

Families Of Newtown Victims To Split $7.7 Million In Donations

No amount of money could ever make up for the loss of the 26 children and educators that were killed during the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings last year, but that didn’t stop the community from gathering millions of dollars to donate to the victims’ families.

The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation has raised over $11.4 million, along with the United Way, however, only $7.7 million will be split among all the families, equalling out to $281,000 each.

While some are upset that all the money will NOT be going to the families, the remainder of the donations will go to a good cause, such as mental health care and other needs.

Committee adviser Kenneth Feinberg explained their decision to divvy up the donation money, saying:

“Is the money adequate? Of course not. No amount is adequate to deal with these horrors. Money is a pretty poor substitute but that’s what we have. Solomon himself could not distribute this money in a fashion that would please everybody.”

We can’t even begin to imagine what the families of the Newtown victims are experiencing, but we hope that this will help to provide some sort of closure, and hopefully, the remainder money will be used to help prevent other horrific disasters from happening in the future.
