The Pont des Arts is one of the most romantic locations in the world. But the love may also be crushing it!
For years people have been putting padlocks on the Paris bridge’s railing, signifying the bond of love with a significant other, a parent, a child, or anyone special in their live.
But padlocks are heavy, and it seems on Sunday, the bridge rails had finally had enough! The sheer weight caused a section to collapse!
It was only a few yards, but it was enough for the bridge to be deemed temporarily unsafe. Local police said:
“The bridge was immediately evacuated and closed.”
Apparently some have advocated for months that the practice of “love locks” be banned, due to both aesthetic disruption and potential physical damage. It seems they have finally been proven right.
There are a few other bridges where this practice has started to take hold, notably the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC.
Will this incident change key legislator’s minds on whether the tradition should be allowed to continue? We’ll just have to weight and see.
