Glamour‘s annual Women of the Year list is known for celebrating successful and influential ladies from various different industries — so why is Bono on the list?

Yup, the U2 frontman has been named as the magazine’s first ever Man of the Year and will be honored alongside all of the other influencers on November 14 in El Lay. Of course, this decision wasn’t made lightly as the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive, dished to the Associated Press:
“We’ve talked for years about whether to honor a man at Women of the Year and we’ve always kind of put the kabash on it. You know, men get a lot of awards and aren’t exactly hurting in the celebration and honors department.”
Again, so why Bono? The industry vet continued:
“But it started to seem that that might be an outdated way of looking at things, and there are so many men who really are doing wonderful things for women these days. Some men get it and Bono is one of those guys.”
Huh. Miz Leive went onto praise the charity work the hitmaker has done on behalf of women through his One campaign. In fact, just last year Bono launched the Poverty is Sexist movement. Color us impressed!
Still, there has been some backlash surrounding the mag’s decision as several readers have taken to Twitter to comment on the choice (below).
Yet another award for women goes to a white cis dude. WTF @Glamour?!? Instead of highlighting an amazing woman, we get moar Bono? SMH https://t.co/bElNptW6Hx

Not to mention, even the 56-year-old has doubts about being honored as he told Glamour:
“I’m sure I don’t deserve it. But I’m grateful for this award as a chance to say the battle for gender equality can’t be won unless men lead it along with women. We’re largely responsible for the problem, so we have to be involved in the solutions.”
Awww. Well at least the rock star is humble about this whole situation.
It’ll be inneresting to see what Bono has to say when he accepts his award later this month. Stay tuned!
