Talk about terrifying!
Before the Summer Olympics even started in Rio de Janeiro, there were a slew of problems regarding the health and overall security of the athletes — but sometimes accidents just happen.
On Sunday a Dutch cyclist, named Annemiek van Vleuten, was competing in the women’s road race and was leading the pack by 40 seconds with about 12 miles left when things took a TERRIBLE turn!

The 33-year-old ended up failing to take a curve in the road correctly and was thrown over her handlebars, landing on her head. YIKES!
After the accident, USA Today reported that the athlete was unconscious on the ground for a “considerable period of time.” Luckily, it’s since been confirmed that Miz van Vleuten only ended up with a concussion and a fractured her spine.
The athlete took to Twitter to share an update on her on health tweeting:
Thanks for all the messages! Congrats to @AnnavdBreggen! We were a super strong team today with @ellenvdijk and @marianne_vos.

I am now in the hospital with some injuries and fractures, but will be fine. Most of all super disappointed after best race of my career.
