Box Office Report: Ant-Man And The Wasp Crushes The Competition In Theaters, Stands Alone At #1!

no title
Shout out to Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is the #1 movie in North America right now!
The Marvel Studios creation has taken in $76 million over the weekend at its box-office debut across the continent — this, according to THR, who reports the superhero flick has successfully crushed its stateside competition during one of the hottest weather weekends of the year!

It wasn’t just stateside that the film did well, either; overseas, Ant-Man and the Wasp took in another $85 million (including a whopping $20.9 million in South Korea alone!) for a global total of $161 million for its first weekend out in theaters!
Not half bad!! Especially when you consider the original Ant-Man opened up to $57.2 domestically in 2015 — so things are definitely looking up for the folks at Marvel!
Even better, according to Disney, a full 45% of the audience for the movie sequel here was female!
That’s not typical for superhero fare, but Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff loved it (below):

“From a diversity perspective, [president] Kevin [Feige] and his team at Marvel have continued to play up all sorts of characters, and all different types of stories. The diversity in their filmmaking resonates with audiences. Ant-Man and the Wasp can’t be compared to The Avengers or a cultural phenomenon like Black Panther, and we are thrilled with where the film is.”

Yes!!
Elsewhere, The First Purge came in strong in its opening weekend, putting up a respectable $31 million from North American theaters.
And a favorite of ours, the new Whitney Houston documentary, brought in $1.3 million from a more specialized set of theaters that dotted the country this weekend.
