Happy, #NationalDonutDay to all! It’s on this holiday that we take the time to honor these circular pastries for what sweet bliss they’ve brought into our lives.
It’s also a day to appreciate Ariana Grande, who has basically become the unofficial mascot for donuts ever since she was caught on camera licking one and suffered worldwide condemnation for it.
We know, we know… #Donutgate happened so long ago. It was a different time back then; for Ari, for America, for that guy in the bandana who she was licking donuts with, probably.
Which is why we thought there would be no better way to celebrate #NDD than to revisit this sweet, hilarious debacle…

It was July of 2015. Ariana had yet to metamorphosize into the superstar she is today. America, meanwhile, was still laughing at the idea of a Trump administration. We didn’t have a lot to get angry about.
TMZ published footage of the then-22-year-old singer and a group of friends causing some innocent-enough ruckus in a donut shop. The pop star was shown cozying up to her bandana-wearing love interest Ricky Alvarez before she cracks up and, with mischievous playfulness, proceeds to stick her tongue into a frosted donut sitting on the counter.
To make matters worse, when an employee enters with an additional tray of donuts, Grande’s face twists into a repulsed expression as she exclaims:
“What the f**k is that? I hate Americans. I hate America. That’s disgusting.”

As we reported, the footage went viral and ignited a firestorm of outrage from American patriots and donut lovers everywhere. The scandal blew up so immensely, Ari was forced to issue an apology where she attempted to clarify her anti-American remarks.
She explained at the time:
“As an advocate for healthy eating, food is very important to me, and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it has on our health and society as a whole. That being said, let me once again apologize if I have offended anyone with my poor choice of words.”
She never really explained her urge to tongue the donut, though…
The incident sparked a police investigation and unfortunately caused the donut shop, Wolfee Donuts, to be docked a grade by the health department. But it wasn’t all bad: business was soon booming for the shop thanks to all the #Donutgate buzz.

Nowadays, the songstress’ relationship with America couldn’t be sweeter. She’s one of pop music’s most beloved artists and has even drummed up renewed interest in the government’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (sort of).
U.S. pride has taken a bit of a nose dive, on the other hand. Tbh, if Ariana was caught licking donuts and saying “I hate America” in 2019, most of us would probably be like…
