Benny Blanco was built for loving Selena Gomez!
The I Said I Love You First collaborators appeared on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast on Monday, where Benny opened up about some seeds of doubt he was able to prune early in their relationship. He told the host:
“I feel like at the beginning there were a few almost-sabotages. At the very beginning, in her first few trips away, she was still gaining that trust.”

Selena conceded “that’s fair,” adding:
“I had sincere doubt.”
But the record producer wasn’t about to turn away from the challenge of winning over her trust! He explained:
“We all have moments in our life … I tell everyone this: it’s like, when you start dating someone you’re not only dating them, you’re also dating every single person they’ve ever dated, every single relationship they’ve ever had in their past, because you’re getting every piece of baggage that person’s carried and what they’ve learned through their own personal life, through their life with partners, with parents.”
*Cough*cough* JustinBieber *cough*
He added:
“I had to find a way to build that trust with her. Not make it feel overbearing, and make it feel real, and make her actually believe it, and vice versa.”
That’s actually so sweet. Someone with Benny’s patience is exactly what it sounds like she needed!
The 37-year-old went on to reveal he encourages Selena to come to him with any doubts so he can reassure her with something as “simple” as a text saying, “I’m going to this thing and thinking about you.”
Awww!
He told her:
“I’ll talk to you through anything you may have. I’m aware of her strengths and I’m aware of her weakness and so what I’ve tried to do is surround her with things that help.”
That sounds so healthy! Good on Benny for being such an emotionally intelligent partner! The songwriter concluded:
“She doesn’t need a lot, she’s like the easiest person in the world but I know she wants to talk to me before bed, wants me to say I love you and text if I end up having to stay somewhere two hours late. I know that stuff really helps especially when you’re long distance.”
We love that!
