Beyoncé is opening up about her family like never before!
In an extremely rare interview published with GQ on Tuesday, the singer got candid about several topics — including life raising her and JAY-Z‘s three children, 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy and 7-year-old twins Rumi and Sir. And as Bey described it, there is “beauty” and “chaos”! First she shared her day-to-day:
“Most days I try to wake up at around 6am, squeezing in an hour or two of work before the little ones are up. Parenting while working, I move forward, embracing the beauty and the chaos of it all.”
And it can get pretty chaotic at times being Beyoncé! Not only does she have a successful music career, dropping the album Cowboy Carter earlier this year, but she also runs several businesses, such as her new whiskey brand, SirDavis. All of this is happening while raising three kids! Jeez! What a jam-packed schedule!

When asked about balancing her personal life with the “massive effort and expectations” of her work, Bey made it clear her family always takes priority! The Dream Girls actress began by talking about the way technology has given her kids a completely different world to grow up in:
“We live in a world of access. We have access to so much information – some facts, and some complete bulls**t disguised as truth. Our children can FaceTime and see their friends at any given moment. My husband and I? We used calling cards and Skype when we were falling in love. I couldn’t afford the international hotel bills, so I literally would get international calling cards to call him. Just recently, I heard an AI song that sounded so much like me it scared me. It’s impossible to truly know what’s real and what’s not.”
So amid that chaos, her top focus is to keep things as normal and private as possible for her kids. Well, as normal as it can be for three kids whose parents are Beyoncé and JAY-Z! LOLz!
The Grammy winner continued:
“One thing I’ve worked extremely hard on is making sure my kids can have as much normalcy and privacy as possible, ensuring my personal life isn’t turned into a brand. It’s very easy for celebrities to turn our lives into performance art. I have made an extreme effort to stay true to my boundaries and protect myself and my family. No amount of money is worth my peace.”
Oftentimes, this is why Queen Bey disappears for a while! She noted fame “can at times feel like prison” — which is why you won’t see her when she doesn’t have anything to promote! She added:
“So, when you don’t see me on red carpets, and when I disappear until I have art to share, that’s why.”
Of course, just like for many mommas, it’s not easy balancing her career and parenting. Yes, even for someone as rich and famous as Beyoncé! However, she tries her best to be a present mom — even while working. To make that happen, the Love On Top artist explained she builds her work schedule around her family:
“I try to only tour when my kids are out of school. I always dreamt of a life where I could see the world with my family and expose them to different languages, architecture, and lifestyles.”
Wow! And it looks like she achieved her dream! While it’s still challenging to juggle everything, being a momma is ultimately so worth it to Queen Bey:
“Raising three kids isn’t easy. The older they get, the more they become their own individuals with unique needs, hobbies, and social lives. My twins are God-sent. Parenting constantly teaches you about yourself. It takes a lot of prayer and patience. I love it. It’s grounding and fulfilling.”
Aww!
What also helps makes things easier is that her kids come with her “everywhere” she goes, even when she isn’t out on the road for a tour:
“They come to my office after school, and they are in the studio with me. They are in dance rehearsals. It’s natural that they would learn my choreography.”
In fact, Blue caught the entertainer bug like her mom! Last year, we saw her eldest daughter step out to dance on stage during the Renaissance World Tour, something Beyoncé wasn’t a huge fan of at first. She shared:
“Blue is an artist. She has great taste in music and fashion. She is a fantastic editor, painter, and actress. She has been creating characters since she was three. She’s a natural, but I did not want Blue on stage. Blue wanted it for herself. She took it seriously and she earned it. And most importantly, she had fun! We all watched her grow more and more every night before our eyes.”
