Billy McFarland may be going all in on Fyre Festival 2 (set for late May and early June), but the people who govern the Mexican island he wants it on haven’t even HEARD of the damn thing!
No, but like, seriously. As we’ve been reporting, the infamous convicted fraudster behind the horrifically ill-fated Fyre Festival back in April 2017 has done his time in prison, gotten out, and been hard at work on the second round set for about three months from now, supposedly from May 30 to June 2.
There’s just one little problem with this version: if it’s really gonna happen on Mexico’s Isla Mujeres like McFarland has claimed, he really oughta tell the island’s political and municipal officials. Because they say they haven’t had any indication that it’s happening even though we’re now less than 90 days out!!!

Late last week, following multiple media requests about the status of Fyre Festival 2, the Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres — basically, the tiny island’s city hall — released a statement claiming they still have no idea about ANYTHING related to the event which is imminently occurring in their little tropical paradise. Translated into English, their statement read:
“The General Directorate for Tourism of Isla Mujeres informs that no person or company has requested permits from this office or any other municipal government department for said event.”
Uhhh…
Then, when the Guardian followed up with Edgar Gasca, the island’s Director General of Economic Development and Tourism, he added this jaw-dropping statement:
“We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist.”
WHAT?!?!
Sooooo even though Billy has been insisting that this follow-up event to the scam of the dang century is totally legit this time around, it seems like the people who really ought to know what’s going on — ya know, officials on the freakin’ island on which it’s going to be held — are completely in the dark?!?! Not great!
People was so shocked by the dual statements from officials on Isla Mujeres that they, too, reached out. In response, the island’s city hall said potential visitors should only get information about tourism-related events from “official communicated channels.” And not, ya know, the dude who was found guilty of two counts of wire fraud regarding the first Fyre Festival and ended up serving time in prison on the matter from 2018 until 2022.

In response to all the uncertainty, this week, McFarland took to Instagram to directly address the situation. In a walk-and-talk selfie video posted to his page and shared jointly on the festival’s official IG account, he started by saying:
“I figured it would be best to hear directly from me what’s actually happening. First, Fyre 2 is real. Second, we have incredible partners leading the festival. They’re in charge of all the logistics, productions and operations. This includes an incredible production team in Mexico who does not eff around. There is no way they would ever take on a fake festival.”
He then went on to claim that he and his partners have been in communication with government officials down in Mexico specifically to “ensure full compliance” ahead of the May 30 start date:
“My partners and I have remained in communication with local and state government to ensure full compliance and a successful event that benefits the local economy, shares the beauty of the Mexican Caribbean with the world and helps make right for all the wrongs. Fyre 2 is moving forward and we are moving forward with full integrity. From now on, updates will come directly from me.”

FWIW, we just did a quick check of the festival’s website (HERE, if you’re curious) and confirmed the May 30-June 2 dates are indeed still listed. Oh, and not only that, but tickets for the festival START at $1,400 a pop and go up to $25,000. Seriously.
