Say it ain’t so, Mamma Mia 2!
The sequel to the star-studded original musical was poised to win at the box office this weekend with a female-heavy lineup, and a female-heavy cast, but… it just didn’t quite happen!
The Equalizer 2 came on strong, defied predictions, out-paced expectations, and took home the top slot of the box office!

Starring Denzel Washington, the R-rated Equalizer sequel narrowly out-gunned the ABBA-inspired flick, with Denzel’s second installment taking home a total of $35.8 million over its opening weekend in theaters across North America.
Mamma Mia 2, on the other hand — even despite Meryl Streep making a late run at it to play her own character’s ghost near the end of the flick! — only took home $34.4 million in its opening weekend.
Just short!!!
The numbers aren’t great for either movie in a relatively quiet summer weekend in theaters, but it’s about what was expected for each, with Equalizer slightly beating out its own projections.

Of course, Mamma Mia‘s first installment back in summer 2008 grossed just $27.7 million in its opening weekend, only later becoming a hit across the globe after a slow burn through theaters.
And The Equalizer‘s first installment — back in the fall of 2014 — was a real sleeper hit at the time, opening to $34.1 million domestically and suggesting that its storyline may yet have more life in it.
What about U, Perezcious readers?! Did U go see anything in theaters this weekend??
