Camila Cabello may not have named names in her new interview, but she said a LOT!
The 27-year-old pop star sat down for a profile with Nylon published on Monday, where she opened up about the inspiration behind her song June Gloom off her latest album C, XOXO. In a nutshell, she sings about her ex’s new girl and a sort of love triangle-type situation. The lyrics go:
“She’s cool, I heard / Won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures / We’re a house fire, for sure / Hope it’ll burn out, but it just gets bigger / If she’s so amazing, why are you on this side of town? / If you like her so much, what are you here trying to find out?”
The lyrics then go in a real NSFW direction. If you haven’t heard the song, you can listen to the full thing (below):
Steamy!
In her interview, the I Luv It singer explained what exactly went into writing the song:
“I wrote June Gloom after I had hung out with [the song’s subject]. I went into the studio the next day and said, ‘Jasper, can you play me some beats?’ He was like, ‘This one, this one,’ and he skipped over June Gloom. I was like, ‘Oh wait! Go back!’”

She then kicked the producer out of the studio so she could have some privacy for her “intimate” writing process:
“When I know I’m about to be intimate, I don’t want anybody [there]. I don’t want to be singing about feeling super horny, but then, like, this guy is right here.”
Uhhh, yeah! That makes sense! Ha!
She continued:
“I wrote it so fast because to me, everything is so personal. I was like, ‘I’m writing this for you, bitch!’”
OOF!
While she was careful to not name names, Camila famously dated Shawn Mendes for YEARS before the pair split up in 2021. And in early 2023, the Stitches singer was rumored to have moved on with Sabrina Carpenter for a few months before ultimately rekindling things with Camila at Coachella that year. Their second go at love only lasted a couple months before they broke things off in June — possibly serving as the inspiration for the title June Gloom. But the short stint was clearly enough to serve as inspo for some new music. We mean, who else could she have been singing about??
If you’re still not on board for the idea, Sabrina seems to maybe have been singing about it, too! Take the lyrics of Sabrina’s song Taste, which is about a love interest who returns to his ex:
“I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too”
Even the guy in the music video kinda looks like Shawn! And Jenna Ortega could totally be playing the dark-haired Camila role! Watch (below):
We mean, these songs are practically sisters! Or, rather, enemies! LOLz! But Camila wants you to know that at the end of the day, she DOESN’T want an enemy, or to be pegged against another woman in the industry. She told Nylon:
“‘Bitch’ sounds like I’m talking about a girl. I just don’t want them to think it’s me being like girl-versus-girl. Can we say, ‘It’s about you, motherf**ker?’”
So it’s Shawn she has the lasting issue with! Ha!
