Chloë Sevigny is as outspoken in real life as she is in her art.
At Variety’s Cannes Film Festival panel on Wednesday, the Boys Don’t Cry actress rehashed multiple incidences of directors making advances towards her and went on to criticize the rampant sexism in Hollywood, which she supported with many poignant real-life examples.

Unfortunately for Sevigny, who just made her first directorial debut with the short-film Kitty, she experienced one too many moments of degradation with men who seemed okay with “crossing the line”. It’s sadly an issue that seems all too common in Hollywood these days…
Recalling those disappointing situations, the artist revealed:
“I’ve had the ├óΓé¼╦£what are you doing after this?’ conversation. I’ve also had the ├óΓé¼╦£do you want to go shopping and try on some clothes and, like, I can buy you something in the dressing room’ conversation. Just like crossing the line weirdness.”
Yuck! Considering Chloë is an accomplished actress, fashion aficionado, and now director, those predicaments were SO out of line!
In another instance, a director told her:
“├óΓé¼╦£You should show your body off more. You shouldn’t wait until you’re as old as this certain actress who had just been naked in a film, you should be naked on screen now.'”
What’s particularly ironic about that director’s comment is that Ms. Sevigny has willing appeared nude in many movies for the sake of art, including the controversial film The Brown Bunny. In the film, the blonde performs un-simulated fellatio on director and costar Vincent Gallo, a move Chlo├â┬½ has received unprecedented flack for over the years.
Defending her decision to take on the intense role, the actress explained:
“I’d probably still do it today. It was a subversive act. It was a risk. And I think it was a way of me staying outside the business in a weird way, but also doing what I want to do in the business.”
Well, that’s one way of looking it at! We appreciate how the trendsetter sticks to her guns no matter what.
Despite the gross nature of her non-consensual encounters, the New York resident stopped short of labeling them as “sexual harassment”. The 41-year-old simply chalked it up to “Hollywood”, which is pretty problematic when you think that this is the going standard for many young women ascending to fame today.
As for other sexist issues she has faced in the industry, Chloë spoke on a hot-button double standard for men versus women on set:
“When women on set become a little emotional, or impassioned even, they’re labeled as hysterical or crazy and have a hard time getting hired again. The double standard of the man being the wild, crazy, mad director is so embraced.We have to allow women to act out├óΓé¼┬ª and just be ourselves.”
How true! The more women act like themselves, the more power they ultimately have!
In a shadier part of the panel, the beauty took direct aim at the Huntsman starring Chris Hemsworth. While the film has three leading ladies — Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain, and Emily Blunt — to its credit, Sevigny feels the director didn’t give the women enough material to work with.
Throwing some major shade, she quipped:
“It has those three great actresses and then the male lead Chris Hemsworth, but I was just like they should have had better material for those ladies. Now that movie probably, I don’t think is performing well, and then will they make another movie with three great powerful women after that?”
Damn! Way to be flawlessly savage, girl!
