Chrissy Teigen Opens Up About Being 'Embarrassed' By Her Postpartum Depression!

Chrissy Teigen was embarrassed about her PPD

Honesty has always been Chrissy Teigen’s policy, even when it comes to subjects most people — including the supermodel — find uncomfortable to talk about.
One of these subjects is postpartum depression, a condition that affects many yet remains somewhat taboo because of the stigmas attached to it. John Legend’s wife first opened up about her PPD battle in 2017, and was applauded by many for her transparency.
But in a new interview with Net-a-Porter magazine’s PorterEdit, the mother-of-two revealed she wasn’t always so fearless when it came to talking about her PPD. In fact, there was a time where she, like many others who have suffered from it, was “embarrassed.”

In the interview, Teigen explained how her history with depression went back years before she suffered from crippling anxiety after giving birth to her daughter, Luna.
As the model recalled, she was prescribed antidepressants when she was a teenager, but eventually stopped taking her meds because she didn’t think her depression “was a real thing.” She remembered:

“I was prescribed Lexapro [an antidepressant] when I was a teenager, and then I just quit cold turkey, not thinking it was a real thing. I thought everyone had problems like mine, like it was part of life.”

Teigen’s life went on; leading to modeling gigs, a relationship with an R&B icon, and social media domination.
But the symptoms crept back years later, when Teigen was a first-time new mom. After giving birth to Luna, the Instagram icon didn’t have the energy to walk upstairs to her bedroom, slept on the couch, and had unexplained aches and pains.

Eventually, Teigen realized she was struggling with postpartum depression — and she didn’t feel too great about it:

“I felt bad [about it] because we had so many resources. John was great and helpful. My mom was here… I was embarrassed.”

Thanks to the support of her husband and mother, the 33-year-old started taking her medication again.
Now, she’s able to balance life as a working mom with a smile on her face!

Dishing how she’s found joy in raising her children while collaborating with chef Paul Barbosa on her next Cravings cookbook, Chrissy said:

“I’m at home with my babies. They’re in the videos with me. I can experiment and cook. Paul and I cook all day. People come in and out all day! And we make them try things for the site. It’s just fun.”

Great to hear!
Raising kids is stressful enough without the crippling mental unrest PPD brings, so we’re glad things have turned around for the busy momma.
Props to Chrissy for keeping it real as always. Read some more highlights from her interview (below).
On regretting some of her off-the-cusp tweets:

“Everything ‘big’ I’ve ever said was just heat of the moment and sometimes very regrettable. I just pop off too quick. Honestly, it’s good to learn that’s not necessarily the way to go every time.”

On sometimes taking clap backs too far:

“Sometimes I will scroll through [comments] and I will just keep reading and reading the positive ones until I find something negative. And then I’ll stop, and I’ll be mad. Or sad. And I’m like, ‘Why did I keep going? There’s no point in that.’ There’s always going to be that person, no matter whose page you go to. The women I love and look up to have that s**t, too… It’s funny when everyone thinks you’re so tough and things just roll off your back and you don’t care. It’s good to care. I think you should want to be a respected, liked person. And it sucks when people don’t like you. It makes you realize the power words have.”

On posting anything and everything to social media:

“There’s nothing that happens that we really feel we can’t post. We don’t want to post pictures of the kids that they may see in ten years and be embarrassed by, but that’s it. We’re not pretending that life is perfect. I’m not the person who goes to work and posts the glam photos. When I’m on set, I love to be present.”

On why she and Legend make such a good match:

“John and I believe a lot of different things. He shares his view, I’ll explain mine. And it’s just a dinner conversation for us. He knows everything I don’t know. I know everything he doesn’t know! That’s why it works.”

Keep being candid, gurl — it’s why we love you!
