Wow!
Christina Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis back in the summer of 2021, and now, five years later, she’s found out she actually DOESN’T have it!
What happened? HOW could this happen??

Christina recently returned home after a four month stay in the hospital. At some point during or after that stay, she got news that would change her life forever. Opening up on her and Jamie-Lynn Sigler‘s podcast So MeSsy, the Sweetest Thing star reveals:
“[The doctor] came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS.’ I was not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy.”
Yeah, we bet! She’s been in pain for all these years, and it turns out they’ve been treating a condition she doesn’t actually have? Obviously she’s suffering from something, but now she’s back at “square one” looking for answers.
“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of the sudden I’m better. If anything, I’ve gotten worse. So I’m back at square one where I don’t know what’s going on with me. And that’s going to be an online investigation that my doctors are going to be getting into just to find out what has been going on since 2021, why did this happen?”
Dr. Marwa Kaisey was brought on the podcast to talk about it, and she says getting misdiagnosed is, unfortunately, somewhat “common” — oh, no…
“It’s not like we have something like a pregnancy test that says, ‘Yes, you have it. No, you don’t.’ It’s a list of criteria. Almost one in five of these people who’d been told they had MS — some for decades — didn’t actually have it. And a majority of them were on medication to treat their MS.”
Wow.
So what can Christina do? What are next steps?
“I’m doing PT three times a week and gonna start the investigation now next week. That’s kind of how new this all is. We haven’t even started the investigation, because it was kind of left up to me to kind of figure it out.”
And that’s just the physical part of it. Living for years thinking you have MS only to find out you don’t would leave anyone with layers of complicated emotions. On hers, she reveals:
“I’m sure people are saying, ‘crybaby, you don’t have MS.'”
Okay, first of all, NOBODY should be saying that. She continues:
“I’m still in shock, and I’m sitting here having slept all day yesterday feeling like absolute crap because of the heat, my legs aren’t working, all the same stuff is happening to me, and yet I have this thing of ‘well you don’t have THAT, so maybe you’re faking it.’ You know, in my head I’m like, what can I be doing differently? But this is what I’m sure a lot of people start thinking when they get their misdiagnosis.”
Elsewhere in the chat she also admits she feels a sort of shame from it:
“It’s weird because I feel like I let everybody down. It’s this weird feeling because I became this — you and I — the poster children for MS. And everything I was doing. I had a reason. I had a f**king reason as to why my day sucked every day. And now I don’t have a reason and it’s very unnerving and it’s very confusing for me.”
Jamie Lynn reassures her, though, telling her she knows the pain she feels is real and to drop that burden of shame:
“This is what I was trying to touch at before about like attaching to a diagnosis or a label. Like it it can give us the comfort in like thinking that we have like, it could help us give us a plan, but it could also be very overwhelming and very confusing. And sometimes you have to strip that all away and just be like this is what I’m feeling. This is the symptom.”
She continues:
“Like sometimes I think I myself even you know almost three decades into this like can can get so caught up in what I think it’s supposed to be or what caused it and it might not be that at all. And sometimes we have to just strip that all away and just acknowledge what we’re going through. And so what you’re feeling is real and you you are you can’t take that away because you don’t have the MS diagnosis around it.”
Such a good friend!! She tells Christina there’s still hope now:
“And again, I was one of those people. I heard that news and literally I was like, ‘You’re going to dance again. You’re going to run again.’ And that might be true. And I’m going to still hold that in my heart and believe that for you because I know it’s I know and truly believe, I pray that there is not something else that would make you think or make you feel like you couldn’t accomplish that. I’m going to continue to hold in my heart that this is a blessing for you and that again everything that you’ve shared and done up until now was very generous and very kind and still generous and kind for you to continue to do that. And so give yourself grace, my friend.”
Absolutely, Christina. Great advice from Jamie-Lynn.
The Married… With Children alum of course still has a lot of processing to do, saying later in the podcast:
“I’ve gone through a great depression because of it. But, you know, I lost everything. I lost my job. I get really emotional because it stopped my life. I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I mean, I’m still in this. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened.”
