Seems like Cuba Gooding Jr. has a process — and this wasn’t part of it!
The actor — who will portray O.J. Simpson in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which premieres on FX in February — says he didn’t want any help from his character’s real-life inspiration!

Speaking at the Television Critics’ Association‘s Winter Press Tour on Saturday, Gooding told reporters about his desire to NOT meet Simpson:
“I didn’t want to. There was no reason for me to. I know what incarceration does to a man. I have friends and family who have been incarcerated. They click and they start to believe whatever it is that they believe as the real thing that happened to them.”
Sounds a lot like recent reasoning we’ve heard from another actor in this cast!
The 48-year-old actor, who said he didn’t want that kind of angle for the performance, added:
“He wasn’t that. He was this flamboyant, charismatic, movie star, marquee-athlete. I needed that arrogance. That was where my focus was.”
An arrogant athlete — perhaps Gooding Jr. will channel just a little bit of his character in Jerry Maguire!
Either way, we cannot WAIT to see this show!!
