Stranger Things Star David Harbour Reveals He Was Sent To A 'Mental Asylum' For Bipolar Disorder

no title
Years before fighting monsters in Stranger Things, David Harbour was battling his own.
The actor got candid about his history with mental illness on Marc Maron‘s WTF podcast, revealing he’s dealt with anxiety, self-hatred, mania — and was even diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 25 years old after being committed to a mental asylum.
The 43-year-old explained that his Catholic roots combined with being sober after years of substance abuse made him believe he was “in connection to some sort of God that I wasn’t really in connection to.”
Insisting he wasn’t on drugs at the time, Harbour confessed he had “a capacity to see ├óΓé¼╦£the elves’ in the corners of the room if I really allow myself to go there” — so, his parents took him into a “mental asylum” where he was diagnosed as bipolar.
The actor then got real about how depressing being locked up in such an institution was, adding “it just ends up being sad and smells like shit.”
Harbour may be the only celeb (besides Kanye West) to think he’s been in communication with God, but he’s far from the first star to get candid about mental health…
