Demi Lovato Gets Real About Returning To Music After Overdose, Not Being Friends With Selena Gomez, & More In Harper's Bazaar Interview

Following her triumphant return to the music scene this year, Demi Lovato is opening up like never before!

In a new interview for the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the 27-year-old singer spoke candidly about the near-fatal drug overdose that spurred her two-year-hiatus, including how her dating life, friendships, and perspective on the future have changed ever since.

First, check out her stunning cover with the publication:

The Anyone singer said she struggled to accept the love and support she received after overdosing in 2018:

“It’s hard when you’re in a moment like that because you don’t feel worthy of it. But looking back, I understand that I was just someone going through something, and people were really supportive and were there for me, and it meant everything.”

Demi told the magazine about the personal difficulties of managing her lapse in sobriety in the public eye:

“It also kind of made it a little challenging because I did deal with that in the public eye—that was the way some people found out. I had relatives who got alerts on their phones. We didn’t even get to call them before they saw what happened.”

Lovato said she learned a lot after the harrowing experience and appreciates how welcoming fans have been in her return to music. It’s all part of what’s motivating her to approach her career differently now:

“I would hate for a detail to become the headline when I’ve worked so hard for my music. But I will say that I’ve really appreciated the patience the public has given me over the past year and a half to figure my shit out, because I think the mistake I made when I was 18, when I went into treatment, was that I went back to work six months later. But at the same time I’ve also sat back on the sidelines for two years. I’ve kept my mouth shut, while the tabloids have run wild. And my album is finally the place where I get to set the record straight on everything.”

While fans eagerly await the starlet’s seventh studio album, Demi’s love life also continues to make headlines in more ways than one! As reported, her longtime ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama recently got engaged to model Amanda Pacheco. Fans will recall the former couple dated on-and-off for six years and Wilmer famously supported the Sober singer through her hospitalization and rehab — but the two don’t speak these days.

Despite the change in their dynamic and a very subtle reference to his nuptials in her latest music video, Demi wishes the 40-year-old actor the best! She reflected:

“I’m really happy for him and I wish him nothing but the best, but we’re not in each other’s lives, haven’t spoken in a long time. But I think I needed that because I needed to learn to be OK on my own. When you get into a relationship with somebody at that young of an age and then you spend six years with somebody, you don’t really get to learn about yourself.”

In the interview, which transpired early last month before the coronavirus pandemic shut everything down, she goes on to describe herself as “single as all hell.” As you’re likely aware, Demi started dating Young and the Restless star Max Ehrich back in late March and as far as we know, they’re still quarantined together, too!

The openly bisexual actress is keeping her options open when it comes to the future, though. She spoke at length about having a family someday, potentially with a woman:

“When I imagine my life in the future, I don’t say, ‘I’m looking for a man who I want to have two or three kids with.’ I think it could be so much fun to share children with a woman. So I don’t know what my future will look like, and I’m open to anything. People always ask me, ‘What’s your type?’ And I’m like, ‘Have you seen my history?’ There is no type. It is solely off connection. I wish I could say, ‘I only date attractive people.’ But I don’t.”

Inneresting! We hope her new flame doesn’t take any offense to that last bit…

The Camp Rock alum also reflected on her Disney days and the friendships she formed with Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and the Jonas Brothers along the way. As it turns out, she the Rare singer are no longer friends!

Unfortunately for us, Demi stopped just shy of revealing why they had a falling out! She broached the topic while mentioning how conflicted she was by Selly’s celebratory post on comeback Grammys performance because they hadn’t spoken in years:

“When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so [the Instagram post] felt… I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”

Wow, way to keep us guessing, girl! However, the starlet said she still talks to Miley, and not her old JoBros:

“I talk to Miley [Cyrus]. She’s awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have. But I think she’s kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with.”

All things considered, Demi said she’s still grateful for everything Disney afforded her:

“I’m grateful for the opportunities that I got. Do I wish that I’d had more downtime? Yes. I think when you are a teenager and you’re given your big break, you’ll do anything to make it happen. I do feel that a lot of the way some of my life was handled and lived led to me kind of having a bit of a downfall, just because I was so overworked and I wasn’t dedicating enough time to my mental health or my personal life.”

And she’s since moved on to form new and strong friendships among her peers, including Ariana Grande who she met through their mutual manager, Scooter Braun:

“I love the fact that Ariana and I have such a supportive friendship because it’s hard to find. Two women who are in a competitive industry—the whole world seems to want to pit women against each other, so it would be so easy to do that.”

Lovato capped off her extensive interview by sharing plans for another return to acting this year! She enjoyed a brief cameo on Will & Grace late last year and is slated to star in the Netflix comedy Eurovision, with Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, and Pierce Brosnan. She even mentioned going back on tour sometime soon, too! Of course, after the coronavirus pandemic finally clears. Read her interview in full HERE!

It’s great to hear how much Demi has grown and changed over the years. We wish her the best on everything that’s to come!
