The former Disney divas got real about their issues, including struggling with body image being in the public sphere.

The I Love Me singer said:

“My whole purpose in coming clean with everything that I’ve been through is to help someone else. Because I remember being 12 years old, my body started changing — obviously, that’s what happens when you’re a preteen and you’re going through puberty … and I didn’t have anybody in Young Hollywood to look up to at that time that had a normal body. … I kinda made a vow to myself that was just like, when I get older, I just wanna represent what I didn’t have.”

The Happy Hippie founder shared her own experience with negative body image, revealing that hurtful memes surrounding her infamous 2013 VMAs performance affected how she saw herself.

“I basically went through two or three years where I wouldn’t wear shorts. I stopped wearing skirts on stage, all this s**t because after the VMAs and I had on my cute little nude bodysuit, everyone started comparing me to a turkey and putting a turkey in my outfit. … I was just so skinny and so pasty and they kept putting me next to this turkey, and I was feeling so bad on myself that I did not wear a bikini for like two years and no one thought that that would ever made me feel some type of way.”

Cyrus explained how she made the best of a bad situation overcoming the body shaming to start Happy Hippie. But she still struggled with the difference between her public persona and how she felt in her private life. Miles went on:

“What was so, I think, hard about it was my brand has always been about being so unapologetically myself and being confident, and the worse thing that I would feel like I would be to my fans is a fraud.”

Demi was surprised by Miley’s story and expressed regret for not being present for her friend. She said:

“First of all, I’m so sad that you went through that and I had no idea. … I wish I could’ve been there. I didn’t know and I feel like we’ve gone through like times where we’re closer and then distant, and that’s fine, that’s what friends do. I just wish I could’ve been there for you. But if that ever f**king happens again, you better call me.”

The Slide Away singer hinted at “petty drama” that caused the Disney Channel duo to lose touch, noting that the Coronavirus crisis is the perfect time to reconnect with old friends:

“It’s in times of crisis that you realize what really matters and it all seems really silly and small. … When it feels like the world is starting to crack we all reach for superglue, and you and I have been that for each other in and out. Like, we can not talk forever and then some bullsh**t will go down and I’ll just know that you’re the person I want to reach out to. … There’s so few of us, that we just need to never let this break again.”

Lovato agreed, saying:

“I feel like, you’ve always been such a light, and that’s why we connected at 14. … We connected then because we just saw something in each other, maybe it was our spirituality, or maybe it was just our hearts, I don’t know.”

Cyrus quipped:

“Or maybe we were just gay as f**k.”
