Um… What?
Worried about losing a few pounds? When you drink diet soda, you can have none of the calories and all of the taste stroke!
“If our results are confirmed with future studies, then it would suggest that diet soda may not be the optimal substitute for sugar-sweetened beverages for protection against vascular outcomes,”
Says Hannah Gardener, lead author of the new study and epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami.
The research was based on 2,564 people and lasted over 9 years. The study found that people who drink diet soda every day have the greatest risk of stroke when compared to people who do not drink any soda.
“It’s definitely alarming. We have worried for a while that the increased prevalence of obesity in children and young adults may take its toll in cardiovascular disease and stroke.”
And according to Dr. Ralph Sacco, American Heart Association president, that appears to be happening, he said.
Even after accounting for age, sex, race and lifestyle choices such as smoking, exercise, alcohol consumption and caloric intake, the increased risk was still 48 percent higher for people who drank diet soda.
Maybe we should all just suck it up and drink water!
It wouldn’t kill us.
