Empire star Jussie Smollett was hospitalized Tuesday after being apparently brutally attacked in what police are now investigating as a possible hate crime.
The alleged incident happened in Chicago overnight; around 2:00 a.m. local time this morning, Smollett — who had just arrived from New York City — went to a sandwich store to get a meal.

As Smollett left, according to TMZ — who spoke to sources directly connected to the actor — somebody yelled at him:
“Aren’t you that fa**ot Empire n****r?”
Whoa…
Without warning, then, two white men reportedly wearing ski masks allegedly viciously attacked Jussie, beating him badly and fracturing one of his ribs in the process.
They put a noose around his neck, and even poured a substance on Smollett, before running off as he fought back.
As they were leaving, the two men allegedly yelled (below):
“This is MAGA country.”
Ugh… so traumatizing.
Smollett was taken in and admitted at a Chicago-area hospital, but his condition had thankfully improved enough that he was discharged later Tuesday morning.

Police are currently investigating the incident, of course, and they released a statement just minutes ago (below):

Just terrifying…
Let’s hope the police catch the alleged attackers as it was reported earlier this week that a threatening letter addressed to Jussie at Fox Studios was delivered.
