In honor of World AIDS Day, French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy spoke out today in support of the battle against AIDS, and the toll the disease has taken on the fashion industry.
The former model revealed:
“I have witnessed the damage that HIV has caused for humanity for some 20 years now. The fashion world was hit head-on by the AIDS pandemic. It really did lose members of its family. The fashion industry became aware about this disease very, very early on, because it was a victim of it.”
France’s first lady has taken on the fight against AIDS as a major concern since her marriage to the French President, and last year became an ambassador for Geneva’s Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
A sad addition to her cause, Bruni-Sarkozy lost her brother Virginio to the disease back in 2006, but the beautiful activist says that her role in the global AIDS campaign is not solely inspired by this fact. She adds:
“My brother unfortunately contracted HIV and he died from it, but my role with the Global Fund is really not linked to my brother’s situation. My brother was lucky to live in France, to be treated in France, to have access to care, have access to the best hospitals. I am now a spokeswoman for people who have nothing.”
Beautiful, philanthropic, stylish and smart – she really is the whole package. To join the fight against AIDS, visit The Global Fund and get involved.
