This is so unsettling.
French gymnast Samir Ait Said was completing a vault event on Saturday night at the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro when, upon landing after a flip, his leg gave way and snapped in two.

The entire thing was caught on camera, as the event was being televised worldwide, and it made for an incredibly gruesome moment that millions had to unwittingly see.

Said’s leg quite literally snaps under him and bends in a way it isn’t supposed to — but if it’s something you can even stomach watching, here it is (below):
My heart sank to my stomach and I let out a loud gasp watching this video of French gymnast #SamirAitSaid land badly while vaulting in #Rio2016 and then breaking his leg even more badly! #Warning: this video is very #graphic! This poor, poor gymnast — and unfathomably, the story actually gets worse.

First of all, this is the second time he broke a leg like this; before the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he broke the other leg in the exact same fashion, according to French gymnastics correspondent Anouk Corge:
“It was two months before London and it was the same thing, except to his other leg. It was on a vault, he landed, and the leg broke in the same way. It was terrible then and for it to happen again is traumatic.”

Even worse, in the immediate aftermath of the injury this time around in Rio, Said maybe wasn’t given the very best care as one would hope, considering the paramedics actually dropped him while on the stretcher and being loaded into the ambulance.

Our thoughts are with Said right now, considering what he endured four years ago and must now endure again.
We can’t even imagine the pain, the anguish, the suffering… let alone the emotional turmoil over having the Olympics taken out from under him now twice in a row due to devastating injuries.
So sad.
