Golden Globe Snubs & Surprises! The HORROR Of It All!

Golden Globes Nominations Snubs Surprises Horror Movies

The more things change, the more they stay the same?

That’s kind of the feeling we’re getting from the 2025 Golden Globes nominations released on Monday. As usual, they ignored SO MANY astounding horror films, that’s just a given… Yet another year with immense talents pushing it to the limit in movies only to get ignored because they aren’t the right genre for awards… But to our great shock this year, a couple did sneak through! One with a whopping FIVE NOMS!

Get ready for a horror-tastic version of our Snubs & Surprises take (below)!

SNUB! — Naomi Scott

OK, everyone who saw Smile 2 cannot stop smiling while talking about the supercharged virtuoso performance by Naomi Scott. Horror films often require extremes, but the role of a hunted pop star required the Aladdin alum to believably sing, dance, scream, and cry — to play versions of herself that were drugged out, paranoid, maimed, monstrous… It’s such a tour-de-force performance worthy of celebration we’re just giving full-on frowny faces at its lack of inclusion here.

SNUB! — I Saw The TV Glow

Jane Schoenbrun‘s inventive A24 horror film is one of the most brilliant LGBT allegories we’ve seen. I Saw The TV Glow was destined to become an instant cult classic… but we did hope maybe a shout-out for Best Screenplay, where indie darlings often shine. Or maybe even actor for the phenomenal Justice Smith‘s heartbreaking performance.

SURPRISE! — The Substance

Sorry, WHAT?!

Speaking of cult classics, how the heck did The Substance, a wild, gory, maximalist body horror flick get MULTIPLE noms?? Maybe it’s because Coralie Fargeat‘s amazing film caught on like wildfire with angry women, or because voters adored Demi Moore‘s no effs given comeback performance. Demi is up for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, Margaret Qualley is up for Supporting Actress, and Fargeat is nominated for Screenplay, Director, and even Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy! WOW!!!

SNUB! — Lupita Nyong’o

OK, y’all, how many times does this have to happen?

Lupita Nyong’o is one of the greatest living actresses, and she proved it yet again in this summer’s heartwrenching — and surprisingly heartwarming — A Quiet Place: Day One. We don’t want to give anything away, but her very different take on a scream queen was so touching, we just can’t get over the fact she’s getting snubbed AGAIN!

SURPRISE! — Hugh Grant

OK, now we’re talkin’! Another pleasant surprise from the Globes!

In his later years, Hugh Grant has basically given up the adorable, hapless thing from Four Weddings and Notting Hill and given over completely into the ne’er-do-well side he drew on for Bridget Jones villain Daniel Cleaver. Only in the horror flick Heretic he goes from charming cad to full-on villain, giving an exceptionally tuned performance in which he takes an intimidatingly dense script and makes every beat feel fresh and juicy!

And the Globes apparently agreed, giving him a well-deserved nod for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy! Wait, in a what??

SNUB! — Sydney Sweeney

Look, Sydney Sweeney will definitely be getting gold sooner or later. But we love how much she put her enormous talent behind Immaculate, which she sought out and produced, as well as leading. It’s a fun, nasty little horror film with an ALL-TIMER of an ending. But really it’s Sydney’s generational talent that brings this thing to the next level, and it’s a shame her performance is going unrecognized.

You can see the full list of nominations HERE! What snubs and surprises did YOU see, Perezcious readers? We stuck with horror this time, but there were plenty of other great films and performances that got ignored, and we’d love to hear your faves!
