Grammy Awards Nominations 2020: SNUBS & SURPRISES!

Perezcious readers, you knew this one was coming!!

As we reported on Wednesday, the Grammy nominations are out and unsurprisingly, there were quite a few beloved artists and projects that didn’t make the final cut — even with more nominees per category than we’ve had in years past.

It seems like the Recording Academy is being extra selective this time around, so let’s jump right into this year’s list of snubs and surprises:

SNUB: Halsey

(c) WENN/Instar

Despite scoring her first Billboard number one record as a lead artist this year on Without Me, the commercial success wasn’t enough to land Halsey a Grammy nod in any of the “Big Four” categories, which include Album, Record, and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist. Better luck next year, we guess?

SURPRISE: H.E.R.

(c) Judy Eddy/WENN

It’s safe to say the people love H.E.R.! The artist, whose name is an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed,” is in a category of her own as she is the only nominee on this list to receive five nominations for the second consecutive year in a row. Last year, the singer-songwriter brought home a win for Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album, so, we’ll see if she can do it again in 2020!

SNUB: Sam Smith

(c) WENN/Avalon

Can you believe it’s been FIVE years since Sam Smith got any love from the Recording Academy?! Yes, really! Even his sexy, standout collaboration with Normani on Dancing With A Stranger wasn’t enough to grab a nomination this time around. But, with four previous wins under his belt, we’re holding out hope the British crooner will make a strong return to the awards show sometime in the near future!

SNUB: Maren Morris

(c) WENN/Instar

Maren Morris was the top nominee at this year’s CMA Awards with six nods and took home one trophy for her album, Girl. Unfortunately, the only potential for a Grammy win lies in the Best Country Duo/Group Performance category for her song Common, featuring Brandi Carlile.

SURPRISE: Michelle Obama

(c) Johnny Louis/WENN

Michelle Obama is nominated for Best Spoken Word Album for the audio to her memoir, Becoming. She is vying to become the second FLOTUS to win in that category after Hillary Clinton, who previously earned the honor for It Takes a Village in 1996.

SNUB: Ed Sheeran

(c) Neil Lupin/WENN

Sorry, Ed Sheeran! It looks like the Recording Academy wasn’t a fan of his latest, No.6 Collaborations Project, as he was completely shut out of the Record, Song, and Album Of The Year categories.

SURPRISE: Beyoncé

(c) Adriana M. Barraza/WENN

Beyoncé didn’t even put out a new studio album, and yet, she still scored FOUR nominations this year?! Talk about star power! Queen Bey is nominated for Best Music Film for Homecoming, which she co-directed with Ed Burke. This brings her total career Grammy nods to 70, just shy of the legendary Quincy Jones who holds 80 nominations.

SNUB: Taylor Swift

(c) WENN/Instar

Taylor Swift only has one shot to walk away with an award at the 2020 Grammys since her song Lover was the only track off of her seventh studio album of the same name to get any love (for Song of the Year) from the Nominations Review Committee this time around! Bummer!

SURPRISE: Nipsey Hussle (Posthumous)

(c) Adriana M. Barraza/WENN

Nipsey Hussle received two posthumous Grammy nominations for Racks in the Middle, the single released just six weeks before the California rapper was shot to death. As you’ll recall, Hussle received his first nom last year for his commercial record debut, Victory Lap, but was edged out by Cardi B‘s Invasion of Privacy for Best Rap Album.

SNUB: Jonas Brothers

Jonas Brothers Grammys snub surprises
(c) WENN/Instar

The Jonas Brothers made quite the comeback in 2019 and are nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Sucker,” but that’s it! The band’s latest project, Happiness Again, didn’t earn a look in any other category.

What do U think the biggest snubs and surprises were? Sound off (below)!
