That was quick!
We’ve received an update regarding accusations that H&M, and by extension its celebrity spokesmodels like Beyonce, turn a blind eye to the harsh working conditions faced by workers in the company’s overseas factories.
The Swedish retailer released the following statement about the matter:
“We believe the article published in Star magazine dated June 10, 2013, misconstrues and ignores the important efforts undertaken by H&M to provide workers in our suppliers├óΓé¼Γäó factories with the better and safer work environments.
On May 13, 2013, H&M was the first retailer to sign the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, initiated by IndustriALL Global Union and UNI Global Union, which now includes 18 other brands and employer associations in the sector. H&M is also committed to improving the daily lives of those workers through its push for annual salaries revisions. All of this information and more is available to the public on our website at www.hm.com/sustainability.
H&M strives to conduct its business in a responsible and transparent way, and we take specific exception to the manner in which Mr. Charles Kernaghan has tried to portray us. We would have appreciated the opportunity to address this issue with the author of this article prior to its being publish, but unfortunately we were never contacted.”
We applaud the company for taking steps to ensure worker safety, and we hope that their continued efforts prevent tragedies like the factory collapse at Bangladesh from happening again.
